HBO is continuing to develop its Harry Potter TV series project to offer an adaptation of J.K. Rowling's work that is more faithful to the novels than the films released in theaters. The American network has already announced part of the official cast, and this recently revealed choice could well bode well for the series.
HBO is gradually unveiling the cast of its Harry Potter series
After announcing the new trio of main actors who will succeed Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint as Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, HBO has revealed many other names of actors to take over the adult roles in the magical saga. While the choice of Paapa Essiedu to replace Alan Rickman as Severus Snape isn't to everyone's taste, the choice of Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby to play Petunia and Vernon Dursley, the young wizard's uncle and aunt, is excellent.
Indeed, in the films, it was Fiona Shaw and Richard Griffiths who played them perfectly, but the actors were about ten years older than the characters described by J.K. Rowling in her books.
If HBO preferred to choose younger actors to play them in the series, it bodes well for the program and for fans waiting to discover the faces that will bring Lily and James Potter, Harry's parents, to life.
With this casting choice, HBO wants to correct some points from the films
Currently, Bel Powell is 33 years old, an age that is exactly the same as Petunia when Harry entered Hogwarts. The wizard's aunt was only a few years older than her sister, who was 21 when Voldemort killed her. By correcting this point for Petunia, we can hope that HBO will also correct the ages of the actors who will play Harry's parents.
It is important to show that the wizard's parents were young at the time of their disappearance. Something that was not shown in the films. The actors who played them, Adrian Rawlins and Geraldine Sommerville, were 43 and 34 years old respectively when the first film was released. They were and appeared significantly older than in the novels. Thus, HBO must choose actors even younger than Powell and Rigby for Harry Potter's parents because this would allow the series to show viewers scenes showing the relationship between the Dursleys and the Potters deteriorating shortly before Lily's death or passages from Harry's childhood. Let's bet that the network will continue on this path because its casting is one of the elements that will allow the series to stand out from the films.
