Harry Potter: HBO's Hagrid will be different from Robbie Coltrane's

As we explained yesterday on Hitek, HBO has made a drastic decision to protect the child cast of the Harry Potter series. Nick Frost, who will play the giant Hagrid in this new adaptation of J.K. Rowling's work, reacted warmly to this announcement, while giving some initial clues about his version of the character.

For a whole generation of viewers, Robbie Coltrane, who died in 2022, will forever be remembered as the actor who played Hagrid in Harry Potter. This benevolent figure from J.K. Rowling's wizarding world was one of Harry, Ron, and Hermione's protectors throughout their school years. This gentle giant, misunderstood and marginal, has a heart of gold. He has great affection for James and Lily's son, but also for his two best friends, and he doesn't hesitate to put himself in danger to help them. Actor and comedian Nick Frost will play this key character of the magical world in the HBO series, whose first season is scheduled for 2026 (if all goes according to plan). In an interview with Screen Rant, the actor explained that, being a father himself, he plans to play an even more fatherly figure to the young cast.

Is Nick Frost's Hagrid a father figure for Harry?

More so than in the Warner Bros. films, Hagrid could prove to be a father figure to the orphan.

Yes. Look, I'm a father myself, so I'm going to be very protective of the kids, and I think that's one of the foundations of Hagrid's relationship with those kids. He's very protective of them, and honestly, I'm looking forward to seeing that. I've had the opportunity to go see some of the sets: Hagrid's beard growing out, the Sorting Hat here, some of the wands there... It's absolutely incredible. Getting the chance to start learning Francesca's script and spending time with [director] Mark Mylod, and the reason I wanted to be involved in the project in the first place, which was to be able to retell the story as Hagrid. I get to play Hagrid. It's incredible.

Nick Frost, currently starring in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon, slips effortlessly into the role of protector of gruff, tender-hearted children, and is predicted to do wonders in the Harry Potter universe.
