When you open Google Maps on Android and iPhone, a small design change should quickly jump out at you.
If you use Google Maps on an Android device or an iPhone, you may have noticed that a detail has changed on the map if you have the latest version of the application. And yes, the logo located at the bottom left has evolved. Previously, we had the traditional Google logo, with the letters in red, yellow, blue, and green, and without the word “Maps” behind it.
Now, it is clearly indicated “Google Maps” instead of just “Google”, and the logo has lost its colors to adopt shades of gray. The word “Google” is highlighted by a bold effect to stand out next to “Maps”. This gives a more sober visual element, which better compartmentalizes the Google ecosystem. If your smartphone is configured in dark display mode, the background of the map is already grayed out. The Google Maps logo is displayed in white in this case, but with pronounced gray outlines around each letter.
Google Maps drops the colored Google logo
You can see this change by installing version 25.21 of Google Maps for Android and version 25.22 of the iOS app. Only the logo has undergone this design overhaul. Google is not getting rid of colors in other elements, such as the Maps pin on the left in the search bar, the Google Lens icon, or around the account photo to access Settings.
The Mountain View company has recently made significant changes to its visual identity. Last month, we noticed that Google changed its search engine logo for the first time since 2015, notably adding a gradual gradient effect to the colors. Further branding and design changes can be expected across other Google products in the near future, as the company strives to make it clear to users that it has entered the age of AI.
