A study shows that several aspects of an application drive away a large majority of users. What they would like instead is not really what we imagined.

You use mobile applications every day. Messaging, shopping, internet browsing, calling, gaming... You're probably used to trying a new one from time to time and then uninstalling the ones you no longer use or don't like.

A seemingly natural cycle, but one that's actually guided by concrete criteria shared by a large majority of users. Amplitude, which develops analysis software, wanted to know what drives people to delete an app and the results are quite surprising.

The firm surveyed 2,000 smartphone owners in the UK, categorizing them by age group. Generally speaking, 58% are likely to abandon an app as soon as they encounter a problem with it.

It should be noted that tolerance varies depending on the type of program. So streaming apps and games are less likely to cause an uninstall at the first sign of trouble. On the other hand, people don't let anything go wrong with apps used for online shopping or transportation. But what are these famous "problems" in detail?

An app will have a much better chance of being used for a long time if it meets these criteria

Ultimately, three aspects prove to be the most frustrating for users. First: popups. They particularly annoy older users, the "boomers," only 17% of whom interact with them. Next comes a long loading time. A few seconds for an app to open is already too much.

Finally, bugs and other "glitches" are the third main reason why people abandon an app. But the most surprising thing is that 85% of participants, regardless of age, “prefer a basic, glitch-free app to a sleekly designed app with occasional issues.”

To summarize, the perfect app for the majority of smartphone owners has a basic, no-frills, pop-up-free, and bug-free design. No need for an ultra-modern interface with elaborate animations and colors that change depending on your wallpaper; people don't care. You can find the full results of the study on the Amplitude website.
