For its new premium smartphone, the Pura 80 Ultra, Huawei is betting on integrating two telephoto lenses into a single, immense photo sensor.

Huawei unveils a smartphone with a huge camera sensor, but for what purpose?

Huawei has presented its new Pura 80 series smartphones, including a very original Ultra model. This one features a gigantic 1/1.28-inch camera sensor, which actually houses two telephoto lenses. As The Verge explains, both lenses are attached to the same set of periscope elements and the same image sensor. A movable prism is responsible for directing light towards the user-selected lens.

This innovative system allows for optical zooms of 3.7x (83mm equivalent) and 9.4x (212mm equivalent) respectively. The first telephoto lens has a resolution of 50 MP and an aperture of f/2.4. The second has a resolution of 12.5 MP and an aperture of f/2.4. As mentioned earlier, the two elements actually share the same sensor. The difference in definition may therefore seem strange. It can be explained either by a cropping of the sensor or by the use of pixel fusion technology. The latter would improve light capture, which is necessarily more difficult when looking for a greater depth of field.

Huawei is still the king of photography

Assembling two lenses in a single sensor is an engineering and design challenge. But this technical feat has the merit of allowing cost savings, since two functions that normally require separate components can share some of them. This design also frees up space, and we know that integrating all the parts into a device as compact and thin as a smartphone is a delicate task that requires compromises.

Huawei's P range (now Pura) is dedicated to photographic innovation and this Pura 80 Ultra does not disappoint in this area, before we put it to the test in real-life conditions, in any case. It also features a 50 MP wide-angle camera with a new dynamic aperture mechanism, as well as a 40 MP ultra-wide-angle camera.

The availability of this unique device in France is not yet known. The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra cost €1,499 here.
