iPhone 17 Air: iOS 26 contains a hint about Apple's ultra-thin smartphone

The iPhone 17 Air continues to be talked about. Recently, we learned that Apple's ultra-thin smartphone would have to make do with a small 2800 mAh battery, would have a titanium chassis, and would be distinguished by its wasp waist, namely 5.5 millimeters thick.

More recently, the phone made a notable appearance in the code of the latest beta of iOS 26, which improves the readability of the Liquid Glass interface and adds a new ringtone. While digging into the code of the second beta of the update, our colleagues at Macworld discovered a clue that confirms the existence of the iPhone 17 Air. For the moment, Apple has never officially communicated about a new iPhone branded Air. The clues unearthed in the beta are therefore the first tangible elements attesting to the arrival of a new edition of the smartphone. This is the first sign that the iPhone is a reality.

iPhone 17 Air Screen Resolution

The media outlet explains that it has unearthed a new version of one of the iPhone's iconic wallpapers, which features clownfish. This version has a new resolution, namely 1260×2736 pixels. Currently, this resolution doesn't match any iPhone on the market. It therefore seems obvious that Apple is preparing to launch a new smartphone with a different screen resolution. Since the other wallpapers in iOS 26 don't have this resolution, it's very likely that Apple accidentally left this one in the developer update. The information was not meant to reach users.

The resolution mentioned in iOS 26 corroborates a report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, published last year. In this report, the expert claimed that the iPhone 17 Air's screen resolution was 1260x2740 pixels, roughly the same resolution as the one found in the beta. According to him, the thinnest iPhone screen would measure 6.6 inches. With this screen size, the iPhone 17 Air would slot in between the standard iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Pro. This intermediate format suggests that Apple wants to inaugurate a new segment within the range, which combines a spacious screen and a reduced cost.

As a reminder, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to be released next September, at the same time as the other iPhone 17s. We will know more about the smartphone in the coming months, as leaks multiply in the run-up to Apple's keynote.
