And another one! Hollywood thinks it has found the magic formula for making video games into successful cinematic sagas. Mario Bros. and, more recently, Minecraft (unfortunately) have been tidal waves, so why not capitalize on the reputation of illustrious licenses to rake in the greenbacks? A unique project has just been announced, however, and it already promises to generate a lot of buzz.
A few days before the release of Death Stranding 2, the sequel to Hideo Kojima's masterpiece, Kojima Productions has announced that it is working on a film. According to Deadline, the project has even already found its screenwriter. Everyone is working hard to make it a reality in the near future. Aaron Guzikowski, screenwriter of Raised by Wolves, will be responsible for imagining this new chapter in the post-apocalyptic universe.
Deepening the mythology
Rather than a literal adaptation of the first or second installment, the production company is banking on a completely new story. It will follow new survivors of this world struck by a series of cataclysmic explosions that resulted in connecting the world of the dead and the living.
New characters, new challenges, but still the same desire to surprise with a sensitive exploration of the themes of survival, the animated film seems to be the perfect project for the one who brought to life the excellent series produced by Ridley Scott. The latter says he is delighted to be able to take part in the adventure.
“I love the world of Death Stranding, it is so creative and liberating, so beautifully dark and yet full of hope; I am so excited and honored that Hideo Kojima, whose work I have admired for a long time, invited me to immerse myself in his creation, to give birth to new stories in this fertile and mind-blowing universe.”
A surprising format
While a live-action project is already in development at A24, Kojima Production is focusing on adult animation here. The company is evoking a similar approach to that of 20th Century Studios for Predators: Killer of Killers. A less realistic aesthetic that could allow players to see the universe in a new light. The video game was applauded for its polished artistic direction as well as its attention to realism in both mechanics and aesthetics.
Line Mileage studio will be in charge of bringing this new film to life. The company has made adult animation its specialty and intends to pay homage to Kojima's imagination. Jacob Robinson (Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft), Daniel Dominguez (Seis Manos), and Brad Graeber (Castlevania) will be involved.
For now, the release date is unknown. It is also unknown if the characters played by Norman Reedus and Léa Seydoux will be invited to take part in this adventure.
