James Cameron wants his Game of Thrones

Forget Pandora, James Cameron has another project in the pipeline. While Fire and Ash is set to hit our screens next December, and everyone is busy bringing this third installment of the saga to life, the director has just set his sights on a fantasy universe. This is a big first for the man who built his reputation on science fiction. He wants to tackle the adaptation of a novel that is causing a stir among fans of the genre. On Instagram, Cameron has just announced that he has acquired the rights to The Devils, a “dark fantasy” novel that has nothing to envy from the universe of George R.R. Martin and was released on May 15th in France. In a press release, he explains that he was captivated by the writing and imagination of its author, Joe Abercombie. The Devils is set in a medieval Europe on the brink of collapse. Plague and famine rage. Power-hungry princes are consumed by their ambitions, and monsters roam. One thing remains certain: the Elves will return, and they will devour anyone who stands in their way. But Vicar Diaz has a mission that could change the face of the world: he must seat a thief on the throne of Troy and finally reunite the Churches of the West and the East.

James Cameron will write the screenplay in collaboration with Abercombie himself, a task that should prove easy since his cinematic writing makes him the ideal candidate for a transition to the big screen. Cameron is full of praise for what he considers one of the most important voices in modern fantasy. The same is true. The British author says he is delighted to see a writer and producer of Cameron's caliber take over his imagination. “No one can compete, he always finds the balance between impressive action, great spectacle and human stakes that take you to the guts.”

Is it coming soon?

While Cameron does not specify the release schedule for this new film, he says he wants to start writing as soon as possible. “I am eager to dive into this new project, as we finish Avatar: Fire and Ash.”As a reminder, James Cameron has several times suggested passing the baton behind the camera for Avatar. He is also expected to devote himself soon to a project evolving around the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It's not yet known where The Devils will fit into this program, or even if Cameron will direct.

We still dream of it, though, that his mastery of visual effects and cutting-edge technology will be put to good use in an epic and dark fantasy fresco. Just as Avatar redefined the panorama of science fiction in cinema, we can hope that The Devils represents a turning point for the genre, which is far too discreet in cinemas and which struggles to convince on the small screen.
