Luke Skywalker Returning to Star Wars? Mark Hamill Responds

Starring in Mike Flanagan's Life of Chuck, Mark Hamill seems to have turned the page on Star Wars. While the actor has returned to our screens since Luke Skywalker's disappearance in The Last Jedi, his participation was limited to a few ghostly cameos in the ninth episode and a visual effects sequence for season 2 of The Mandalorian. But while the future of the galaxy far, far away remains uncertain in cinemas, could the hero return? The question is haunting viewers and the press. In the midst of a promotional campaign for the release of his new film, the 73-year-old actor is rather categorical.

Opportunities should not be lacking; the release of The Mandalorian & Grogu could have been an opportunity to explore further this idea of a Jedi school founded by Luke. But Hamill has no ambitions to put his mantle back on anytime soon. He explains to ComicBook:

What does the future hold for Star Wars?

With its much-maligned final trilogy, Lucasfilm bid farewell to most of its original heroes. Han Solo, Leia Organa, and Luke Skywalker passed the baton to a new generation of characters, including Rey Skywalker. She was at the center of the latest installments and is set to return for a film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The project, made official at Star Wars Celebration 2023, was supposed to hit theaters worldwide quickly, but has been significantly delayed. During the most recent celebration, the project, dubbed New Jedi Order, was only briefly mentioned. While Dave Filoni has promised that it is still in development, it is no longer a priority for Disney and Lucasfilm.

More broadly, Lucasfilm seems to want to turn away from the Jedi and the Force to focus on depicting the struggle led by new heroes. This will be the case with Starfighter, an enigmatic film made official last April. Ryan Gosling will play a pilot in this project directed by Shawn Levy, whose timeline has not been specified, except that it will be a period never explored by the license. At the same time, The Mandalorian & Grogu must show how, after the fall of Palpatine and the Empire, the New Republic continues to work to prevent a new totalitarian state from emerging.

Andor has proven that Star Wars still has a lot to tell behind the scenes of the Rebellion and the Empire, far from the famous heroes and antagonists. It remains to be seen whether the brand will succeed in creating new iconic figures, those who will be able to mark popular culture, like Luke, Leia and Han in their time.
