What if Mace Windu had indeed survived his fall in Revenge of the Sith? The idea is becoming increasingly important today, as a director heavily involved in the Star Wars universe is actively campaigning for its return.

The return of Mace Windu: symbol of dependence on the Skywalker saga

While Disney's attempts to expand the Star Wars lore and showcase new characters are represented by The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew, Andor, Rogue One, and even the series The Acolyte (which explored the little-known era of the High Republic), fan service is never far away as a marketing argument.Would Lucasfilm and Disney not be able to freeing itself from the Skywalker saga and the entire legacy left by this great family?

While it is difficult to ignore an immense generation, the films and series released by the company since its takeover of Lucasfilm betray a strong dependence on the mythology left by George Lucas. By bringing back Palpatine in The Rise of Skywalker, copying part of the plot of A New Hope in The Force Awakens, as well as resurrecting Boba Fett through a dubious twist and giving him his own series, are among the best examples.

A return more and more insistent

The possible return of Mace Windu, debated several times within the Star Wars sphere, is in a way part of the same logic as that of Boba Fett. Popular, the Jedi Master could have survived his fight against Palpatine. George Lucas had thought of a completely different outcome. The idea still seems improbable after a missing arm, an electrocuted body, and a fall into the void.

Poll: Would you like Mace Windu to return?

But why not. Actor Samuel L. Jackson has already expressed his wish to don the cape of the Jedi Council member again, and today, it's the turn of Jurassic World actress Bryce Dallas Howard to bring the matter up again. The actress, who also directed an episode of The Book of Boba Fett and three of The Mandalorian, seems to be campaigning to bring back Mace Windu. Deeply rooted in the universe of the galaxy far, far away, she spoke with Dave Filoni, creative director of Lucasfilm, to shed light on the character's fate. For the media outlet The Direct, she confided: "I went to see Dave Filoni and I asked him. 'Let's talk about Mace Windu and where he is. Is he really dead?'

While, in return, the showrunner of The Mandalorian, of Ahsoka, of The Book of Boba Fett as well as the animated series Clone Wars or Rebels, was very evasive, Bryce Dallas Howard and Samuel L. Jackson are very keen on the idea of working together upon return of the Jedi. It remains to be seen - if the idea ever comes to fruition - how and where to find space. But on this point, we trust Disney, which knows so well how to bring the iconic Star Wars characters out of its immense toy box.
