Scheduled for November 2025, the new expansion for Magic: The Gathering promises to make history for the franchise. The set, based on the Nickelodeon animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, will be available on November 21st. It will allow players to master the elements and embody their favorite characters from the series, all in a standard playable format. It remains to be seen how the protagonists and mechanics of the American television series will find their place in the TCG.
Magic and Pop Culture
For several years, Magic has been multiplying its connections with universes from pop culture, through its Universes Beyond packs. After resounding successes like Final Fantasy and Doctor Who, Avatar is set to join the game ecosystem in November 2025. The first glimpse of this collaboration: a double-sided legendary card dedicated to Aang, the hero of the series. On the first side, we see the character in full mastery of the four elements—water, fire, earth, and air—in his Avatar state. On the second, Aang faces his Avatar Spirit, in an illustration by Bryan Konietzko, co-creator of the animated series.
On the gameplay side, the card stands out with new mechanics: the player will be able to draw a card each time they manipulate one of the four elements. If all the elements are mastered during the turn, the card transforms, revealing Aang's full potential. The Master of Elements side then allows, at the start of each turn, to gain 4 life points, draw four cards, place four +1/+1 counters on Aang and inflict 4 damage to each opponent — a thematic synergy faithful to the spirit of the series.
Beyond this iconic card, Wizards of the Coast promises a set teeming with winks a nod to the Avataruniverse. Players will be able to “travel on a sky bison, channel the memories of past avatars, and explore a world of unsuspected wonders,” the manufacturer promises. The announcement comes with growing anticipation: details on the specific mechanics and other cards in the set will be revealed on August 12, 2025, during a dedicated presentation.
A strategic challenge
The choice of Avatar: The Last Airbender is not insignificant. The series, acclaimed for its narrative richness and universe, benefits from a community of loyal fans. Its integration into the Magic universe is part of a logic of diversification and expansion. We'll have to wait until August 12th to discover the full extent of the mechanics and maps, before the official release scheduled for November 21, 2025.
