It's the big question all fans are asking: when will Marvel Studios finally start production on the Blade movie? Announced for a while now, Mahershala Ali has been chosen to play the character. But the project has suffered numerous postponements, and it's still unclear if the feature film will ever see the light of day. At the premiere of Jurassic World: Renaissance in New York, the actor gave an update on the project.
Blade, a highly anticipated Marvel film that is struggling to see the light of day
On June 23, 2025, Mahershala Ali was on the red carpet at Lincoln Center for the premiere of the blockbuster Jurassic World: Renaissance. The actor, who was chosen by Marvel to succeed Wesley Snipes as Blade, discussed the status of the film project while answering questions from the Hollywood Reporter. It must be said that the film's development has been chaotic, to put it mildly. Indeed, Marvel announced the Blade reboot project in 2019. In the meantime, the film suffered several setbacks such as the health crisis, the writers' strike in Hollywood, not to mention the writers and directors who decided to leave the ship.
Initially scheduled for release in November 2023, the House of Ideas announced that the film would be released in theaters in September 2024, then changed the date again to November 2025. Finally, Marvel made changes to its release schedule and we discovered that Blade no longer appears in the document. Finally, last March, an American journalist announced that the studio had decided to simply cancel the reboot due to production delays.
Mahershala Ali still hopes to play Blade
Asked about the project, Mahershala Ali explained that he was still optimistic about playing the vampire hunter on screen:
I'm taking things day by day. I'm doing my best. I would love for Blade to happen, we'll see, I don't know where Marvel is at the moment. I'm just looking for her next big role, really.
It seems the main person involved is not aware of what's going on at Marvel. However, the studio might know what it's going to do.
Indeed, David S. Goyer, screenwriter of the 1998 film Blade, and who also worked on Christopher Nolan's Batman films, as well as Terminator: Dark Fate and Hellraiser in 2022, offered his help with the script for the Blade reboot. But the studio declined the offer, claiming they "found the solution and are in a good situation." Now we just have to wait and see what Marvel has in store. Perhaps Marvel's recently added December 2028 release date will be reserved for this project.
