Malcolm in the Middle: Bryan Cranston (Hal) explains why Dewey won't be back

Since last December, it's official. Malcolm in the Middle, the famous series from the early 2000s, will return with a final season on Disney+. This bonus season will consist of four episodes and should feature Malcolm, who is now also facing the challenges of parenthood.

We already know that Franckie Muniz (Malcolm), Bryan Cranston (Hal), Jane Kaczmarek (Lois), Christopher Masterson (Francis), and Justin Berfield (Reese) will reprise their roles. Unfortunately, Erik Per Sullivan (Dewey) will be absent, replaced by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark (The Expanse). Today, we know a little more about this absence.

Filming for season 8 of Malcolm ended on May 17. Frankie Muniz confirmed the news via social media. Bryan Cranston (Hal) didn't hide his enthusiasm, promising fans that this new season would be "hilarious and heartfelt".

This season 8, which comes 18 years after the season 7 finale, remains a pretty big challenge. Although most of the main cast will be there, they will have to cope with the absence of Erik Per Sullivan, who brilliantly played Dewey. The latter did not wish to reprise his role for this final season.

The young actor quickly left the set in 2010, shortly after the final season of Malcolm. Today, he continues his life, away from the cameras. It is quite logical that the young man, now 33 years old, did not want to reprise his role.

During the latest podcast Fly on the Wall, Bryan Cranston gave a few more details. He tells us that Erik Per Sullivant is currently a student at the prestigious Harvard University and is working on a Master's degree. He goes on to confirm that he is very excited about the return of the series, but that he wishes not to take part in it:

Bryan Cranston continues in the podcast:

So it is actor Caleb Ellsworth-Clark who will have the difficult task of succeeding Erik Per Sullivan, who made a whole generation of viewers laugh with his perfect portrayal of Dewey.

In this new and final season of Malcolm in the Middle, the whole family gets together to celebrate Hal and Lois's 40th wedding anniversary. Malcolm is reunited with his family with his partner and their daughter, Leah, who is described as very independent and "already wiser than most of her family." According to Variety, Leah already has the same "sarcastic sense of humor, impulsiveness, and intelligence" as her father. She is also described as being "much more sensitive and emotional." For his part, Bryan Cranston (Hal) said of the new season: "We find this family that fell off the radar 20 years ago. All the boys are adults, with children of their own. This creates new dynamics. And yet, will things really change between Hal and Lois?" I'm not so sure about that!".

Malcolm in the Middle aired between 2000 and 2006 in France. For the moment, no trailer and still no release window for the next four episodes. It will probably be at the end of the year, on Disney+.
