“Metroid Prime 4 is out”: The fake news that drove fans crazy

Metroid Prime 4 is one of the most anticipated games on the new Nintendo Switch 2 and the Switch 1. And indeed, a rather unusual story unfolded recently, narrowly missing the possibility of a surprise release for the game – much to the excitement of its many fans. Here's an explanation.

Metroid 4 surprises everyone

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond may not have been released yet, but it has just made headlines in a rather unexpected way. In recent days, a poster seen in the London Underground simply announced that the game was "Out Now." (Available now). This suggested a surprise release for the brand new Nintendo Switch 2, which has already been available for a few weeks.

Obviously, social media quickly went wild. The idea of a sneaky launch for Metroid Prime 4, without a teaser or Nintendo Direct, certainly seemed surprising, but not entirely impossible in a context where shadow drops are becoming increasingly common. Unfortunately, for those who almost jumped on their console, the excitement quickly died down. Nintendo confirmed that it was simply a mistake. The poster contained an "Out Now" notice that should never have been there. In all likelihood, the visual was copied from another advertising campaign (probably for Mario Kart World) without the mention being corrected.

Coming soon to Switch 2?

Rebooted in 2019 after a complete restart of the project, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is now in the hands of Retro Studios, the creators of the original trilogy. It is scheduled for release in 2025, on both Switch and Switch 2, with notable differences depending on the console used.

On Switch 2, the game will offer two graphics modes, a quality mode in 4K/60 FPS (with HDR), and a performance mode in 1080p/120 FPS. Enough to adapt to the preferences of players, depending on whether they prioritize fluidity or visual finesse.

Another notable new feature is that the Joy-Con 2 will allow "mouse"-type control, for more precise aiming, especially in portable mode. A feature already tested on internal demos, which is a bit divisive but shows the desire to modernize the approach on Metroid Prime 4.

A universe faithful to the Metroid spirit

The plot remains largely mysterious for Metroid Prime 4, as always with Nintendo. We simply know that the story will take place on a new planet called Viewros, where Samus Aran will be in search of an artifact while facing the bounty hunter Sylux. A dynamic that promises intense clashes and a return to the exploration so dear to the series.

The gameplay of Metroid Prime 4 will combine all the classics of the license: the Morph Ball, scanning environments, puzzles and combat in first-person view. But there will also be additions, notably psychic abilities, still not very detailed but visible in the latest promotional videos.
