MindsEye: Following the disastrous launch, the studio speaks out

That's it. After several weeks of relatively chaotic marketing, which were notably marked by a very high-profile departure from one of the studio's CEOs, MindsEye is now officially available. The first title developed by Build a Rocket Boy, it was particularly closely watched at the time due to the fact that one of its creators, Leslie Benzies, was formerly a prominent member of Rockstar Games. But unfortunately for him, this new GTA-like is far from achieving the same success as its model.

Unsurprisingly, the launch of MindsEye is chaotic

In fact, as one might expect, it's actually quite the opposite. As proof, two days after its launch, MindsEye already has over 1,200 user reviews on Steam, and the finding is clear: over 40% of them are just average. On social media, the feedback is hardly more positive. Because while some people are quick to point out that while the game isn't incredible, it's still entertaining, what stands out most is the catastrophic state MindsEye currently finds itself in.

We've lost count of the number of posts, on X and Bluesky alike, reporting bugs, each one more mind-blowing – but sometimes amusing – than the last. Faulty textures and lighting, NPCs doing absolutely anything, unstable framerates, or even untimely crashes, the list is long. "It's the scariest bug I've ever seen since Assassin's Creed Unity," jokes one user on X, showing a video of a MindsEye NPC completely disintegrating before his eyes after being hit by the player.

The result of the disaster is such that even the sponsored streams, although few in number, are finally turning sour. On Bluesky, for example, the video of a streamer bursting into laughter when he has to encourage players to buy is starting to go viral. It must be said that for the latter, it's difficult to remain serious after seeing the state of MindsEye live. Another streamer named CohhCarnage, meanwhile, indicates that his sponsored stream was simply canceled by the studio at the last minute and postponed. That says a lot.

A new patch is on the way

In short, it's easy to understand why no hands-on controller preview was organized for the press before the game's release. And even more generally, why almost no media received any code to test it from Build a Rocket Boy. Again, much like what happened with the console versions of Cyberpunk 2077 in 2020, there are signs that don't lie. This also explains why you still can't find any MindsEye reviews in our columns at the time of writing.

On the good news side, however, the studio announced yesterday that the launch of a third patch is in the works. "We understand that the current minimum spec requirements are very high, but our engineering team is working hard to improve the performance [of MindsEye] on mainstream hardware and consoles by integrating the performance improvements of Unreal Engine version 5.6," he said yesterday. "We will provide the schedule for Patch 3, which will include these improvements, within the next 24 hours.".
