MindsEye, the GTA-like, in turmoil just before its release

Let's not lie, we can't really say that the hype is there for MindsEye. The first game developed by Build a Rocket Boy, a studio founded by a former Rockstar Games employee, this GTA-like game scheduled for June 10th isn't exactly shining brightly in the news. Or at least not in a good way, since after receiving a big gameplay presentation, the title was mainly talked about for the inappropriate comments made by one of its directors. And the situation is unfortunately far from improving.

MindsEye is in turmoil

At the end of last week, Mark Gerhard, co-CEO of the studio alongside Leslie Benzies, was indeed making headlines due to his particularly dubious comments. Indeed, according to him, if MindsEye is currently the subject of negative criticism from the press and content creators, it is simply because they were paid to say bad things about the game. And not by just anyone: by the creators of GTA 6 themselves! Absurd remarks, obviously, which did not fail to provoke a reaction on the web.

However, if a certain mistrust currently surrounds the MindsEye project, it is not for nothing. We cannot really say that the few gameplay presentations that have taken place so far are very engaging. Because if the game does not seem to be catastrophic, we cannot say either that it lives up to current standards for a production of the genre. In fact, many gamers even say that it seems to be a good ten years behind the times, with some joking that it could almost be a successor to the PS3 / Xbox 360 generation.

The studio loses two key members

For Build a Rocket Boy, which still hasn't let the press near MindsEye just days before its release, the situation is looking extremely complicated. And the recent resignations within the studio aren't going to reassure players. Because, as Riley Graebner, Legal Director, and Paul Bland, Financial Director, revealed on their respective LinkedIn pages, they are no longer working for the British company after several years of loyal service.

Of course, let's not sell the bear's skin before it's killed: departures after the completion of a project are not necessarily an unusual thing in the industry. However, given the situation MindsEye finds itself in, this is interpreted by some as a new sign that the situation is extremely delicate internally. Especially since this comes shortly after revelations made by former employees, who report an openly toxic atmosphere within Build a Rocket Boy.

A more than uncertain future

In short, suffice to say that just a few cables away from the release of MindsEye, all this is not really doing the studio any favors. It now remains to be seen how gamers will react to the game in the coming days. Will it be released to total indifference? Will it be met with a barrage of scathing criticism? Or will it, on the contrary, create a pleasant surprise? Or will it be a bit of all of these things at once? We'll find out very soon. In the meantime, you can still find our exclusive interview with the game's creators.
