Mission: Impossible 8, the director explains this controversial passage

All good (?) things must come to an end. After eight installments since 1996, the Mission: Impossible saga is coming to a close. The Final Reckoning should, according to the latest news, mark Tom Cruise's farewell to Ethan Hunt. While Paramount Pictures is keeping the possibility of a ninth installment a secret, the saga will never be the same again. The death of one of the original team members was inevitable, and everything suggested that Luther would be the next to die, after Ilsa Faust in the previous installment.

“It was a sacrifice he wanted to make”

Asked about this choice, Christopher McQuarrie explains that it was necessary for the dramatic tension. He even confided to Empire that the idea is not new. It was prepared with Fallout, released in theaters in 2018. In this film, Luther is taken hostage and the Apostles hope to exchange him for plutonium cores. But the character played by Ving Rhames doesn't see it that way and urges his friend not to accept such an exchange. "Don't do this, Ethan, not for me!" The director planted the seed of a sacrifice that would take seven years to materialize. According to McQuarrie, the actor fully invested himself in this final mission, that of saying goodbye to the character he has played since the very first film in the saga. This death helped to reinforce the main theme of this final film: "The story was about sacrifice. Without him, the film wouldn't have had any weight, it was impossible without a certain loss." The hacker was the key to this mission as well as its greatest weakness. In theory, Ethan Hunt could continue on his way with his other companions, but the saga seems to have reached its limits. How many times will Ethan Hunt be able to escape death?
