Mysterious Windows bug prevents Chrome from launching with parental controls

Mysterious Windows bug prevents Chrome from launching with parental controls

Microsoft has a grudge against Chrome. The company has in the past used schoolyard-level shenanigans to push Windows users to its own browser, Edge. For example, an update to the operating system broke the default browser function. The company spammed Chrome users to force them to switch to Bing. It also injected ads for Edge into the Chrome download page.

Microsoft still doesn't like Chrome

This latest one seems more like a bug than a malicious intent, but given previous attempts, it's still worth being wary. Microsoft's Family parental control feature—also used in schools—started blocking Chrome usage two weeks ago. The browser no longer launches at all on Windows.

Only Chrome is affected: Opera and Firefox remain fully functional. Some users have been able to restore Chrome's normal behavior by changing the app name to "Chrome1.exe" instead of "Chrome.exe"). It is also possible to disable the inappropriate site filtering feature to restore normal Chrome usage, but in this case, children have access to all websites.

Microsoft is investigating the cause of the bug; there has been no direct communication with Google about this mysterious problem. A Chromium engineer indicated on June 10th that no fix was planned for the moment.
