ightreign, the new roguelike spin-off of Elden Ring, has been generally well-received by players. But compared to other FromSoftware titles, it still suffers from a severe lack of replayability; the game loses much of its appeal once you've played through the various bosses and Shifting Earth events.
Fortunately, the studio seems to have taken note, and is already starting to add additional content. Without warning or publishing a patch note, Miyazaki's troops have just added an additional boss, to the great delight of those who have already exhausted the available content.
A slight disappointment, however: at the risk of disappointing some, it is not a new original enemy. The new expedition proposes to face a supercharged variant of Adel, the Baron of the Night – or Gaping Jaw for short.
A monstrous challenge
This inexhaustible monstrosity has already built a solid reputation in the universe of Nightreign, notably because of its constant aggression which puts the reflexes and concentration of the team to the test. But that's nothing compared to the challenge that this new version represents Everdark Sovereign.
Indeed, the boss becomes even more aggressive and unpredictable than its standard counterpart, making the fight particularly chaotic. Furthermore, the structure of the fight changes radically. The first phase, which is traditionally the most relaxed (all things considered), is over: the beast starts directly in phase 2, where things get considerably tougher. And once he reaches 50% of his life bar, he enters a third and new phase where he gains access to other attacks, each more devastating than the last.
But the biggest difference compared to the basic version is the introduction of a new mechanic. Throughout the fight, Adel generates a powerful cyclone that follows his every move. Players must therefore remain in contact with the monster at all times, or risk suffering significant damage, which is anything but easy with such an aggressive and mobile opponent.
Currently, this is the toughest boss in the game; even the fearsome Heolstor can't match it in terms of intensity and raw difficulty.
A welcome diversion while waiting for more content
If you're interested in the challenge, you'll have to learn to overcome it relatively quickly. This fight will only be available for a limited time, until June 25. From then on, it will give way to other alternative bosses. Bandai Namco has already announced that two other Nightlords will be getting an Everdark version in the coming weeks: Sentient Pest and Darkdrift Knight. The others will be added later, at a date yet to be determined.
From there, they will likely follow one another in a perpetual rotation that will allow players to tackle new challenges, while waiting for a real expansion to compensate for the current lack of content.
