Nintendo announces a surprise Splatoon spin-off

Nintendo announces a surprise Splatoon spin-off

What if Nintendo ultimately decided not to broadcast a conference in June 2025? The Kyoto-based company has accustomed us to its summer conferences, but the new Nintendo Today app could well change the way the company communicates its new releases. At the launch of the service, users were able to discover exclusive information about the live-action feature film inspired by The Legend of Zelda franchise. But this new approach now applies to game announcements.

Without even warning, the manufacturer's mobile app shared a first teaser for a Splatoon spin-off that no one had heard of until then. The general announcement on social networks was even delayed in order to give the exclusive reveal to Nintendo Today. In the future, we'll have to keep a close eye on the service, as Nintendo Direct-worthy trailers are sneaking in by surprise.

Splatoon Raiders: What is it?

The first Splatoon game exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2 will be an adventure game derived from the main franchise. Few details have been shared about Splatoon Raiders and the manufacturer invites us to "stay tuned for more." Should this be interpreted as a sign of an imminent Nintendo Direct presentation? Nothing is less certain now that Nintendo is shaking up its communication habits.

For now, fans will have to make do with a few images as well as the beginnings of the storyline. In the game, players will embody a mechanic who sets off on an adventure on the mysterious Spirhalite archipelago alongside the Tridenfer, the trio of idols from Splatoon 3. The colors used in the title's logo also suggest a link with the Salmonoids from the Salmon Run mode.

A free update for Splatoon 3

While waiting for further news regarding the spin-off, Nintendo has a lot of new features in store for Splatoon 3. Starting June 12th, a free update will offer new weapon variants from the Alpaj and Apex brands, as well as the reintroduction of the famous Turbot Passage map from the first installment of the franchise released on Wii U.

Unsurprisingly, the online game will also welcome graphical improvements for Nintendo Switch 2 owners. The graphics will now be more detailed, and Some areas previously limited to 30 frames per second (such as the Cité-Clabousse square or the site of the major festival) will benefit from a major gain in fluidity. Also, Nintendo took care to confirm that Switch and Switch 2 players will be able to play together, even if backward compatibility already seemed to be a given.
