A brand new update is available for all Nintendo Switches, including the Switch 2. The new firmware version 20.1.5 follows on from version 20.1.1 released a little earlier, which mainly brought patches that resolved a series of bugs.
With the major update 20.0.0 of the Nintendo Switch introduced many new features related to the arrival of the Nintendo Switch 2, the console manufacturer has not been idle and has been releasing system updates. It must be said that not everything went immediately as planned in a console ecosystem that has become more complex over time.
As usual, the precise version number chosen by the company is a major indicator of the changes to be expected in the new version of a firmware. The first number (here 20) indicates a major update. Followed by an intermediate increment (now 20.1) that indicates more subtle but no less important changes.
What's changing with Nintendo Switch software version 20.1.5?
The latest number, which currently bumps the system software version from 20.1.1 to 20.1.5, indicates more subtle patches related to bug fixes and other system stability improvements. The reason Nintendo is adding 4 points compared to the last version remains unknown. This could be an arbitrary choice, or it could also indicate that other intermediate versions have not passed the testing phase.
The last minor update of this type mainly addressed issues and inconsistencies encountered by players with version 20.1.0, since it was then impossible to launch games on some devices. From what we know, the now-arriving version 20.1.5 applies even more discreet fixes. The release notes are terse and only mention the following:
- General system stability improvements to enhance the user experience.
However, some Internet users have discovered what this update brings more concretely. Indeed, a certain OatmealDome, specialized in datamining, believes he knows that version 20.1.5 fixes a bug that prevented certain Switch 1 games from launching on the Nintendo Switch 2. And advises “if you have problems with certain games, try again after the update”.
As you will have understood, its installation is strongly recommended. And accompanies a series of other updates directly targeting certain games, including Mario Kart World for the Switch 2. It remains, however, a formality. If your Nintendo Switch hasn't already automatically prompted you to install it, simply follow these steps to install it.
Go to System Settings and select Update. That's it. Just make sure you have a stable internet connection throughout the installation process to avoid any issues during the update.
