This weekend, One Piece generated a lot of reaction from fans, both in the manga with chapter 1150, and in the live-action with announcements regarding season 2 of the Netflix series. Chopper's design was notably revealed, but it wasn't very well received by the community. Eiichiro Oda then shared his opinion on the matter, an opinion that is also likely to generate a lot of discussion.
One Piece Season 2: Chopper's Design Is Disturbing
Adapting characters from comics or anime into live-action is a difficult thing. In fact, disappointment is almost always the order of the day. This was the case for Sonic at the time, or more recently, for the dwarves in Snow White. While the first ended well in the first case, the second showed that it could be fatal, even if it's not the only problem with the remake.
As season 2 of the One Piece series approached, there was concern: how would Netflix adapt Chopper? The answer came this weekend during Netflix Tudum 2025. In a short video, we could see the character moving and interacting with the audience. Problem: this got a lot of fans talking. Some have already considered doing what they did with Sonic in his time, but there's little chance Netflix will backtrack. Indeed, Oda has also reacted to this announcement, and his opinion is rather positive.
Eiichiro Oda approves of Chopper's design
Following the latest news about the One Piece series, Eiichiro Oda shared a message on social media. He obviously talks about Chopper's design, but also about the talented team that worked to bring him to life. Through this message, we understand that the mangaka, unlike some of the public, is satisfied with the design.
The key to this second season is, obviously, our strange talking animal. After numerous tests by the entire team, the day has finally come to unveil him! From his shape and fur to his expressions and voice, including the lighting, a world-class team has combined their skills to bring Tony Tony Chopper to life, and now he's ready to be presented to the world!
It must be said that Oda is very involved in the production of the Netflix series. No choice is validated without his approval. Chopper's design was therefore approved by the mangaka, as was the actress who will play him. Mikaela Hoover will lend her voice and face to the little reindeer. She already has experience in this type of role, more precisely in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 where she played Floor. Her convincing performance undoubtedly played a role in Oda's decision. Even if the design is divisive, Mikaela Hoover could well turn the tide with her interpretation. Moreover, in her thank-you video, she appears very moved and invested, which bodes well for the character.
This is not a drill, Nakama!
