Nintendo reportedly anticipated stock shortages for the Switch 2. The company is sending displays to stores to warn customers that the console is unavailable.

Oops, Nintendo is preparing for a Switch 2 shortage

The long-awaited day is approaching! The Switch 2 is coming out on June 5, 2025, and players who pre-ordered the console should be able to get their hands on their copy fairly easily. For others, however, who prefer to buy in-store, for example, acquiring Nintendo's new console could be a little more complicated.

The manufacturer has even sent large signs to some retailers indicating that the Switch 2 is out of stock, as shared on Reddit. This signage will allow interested consumers to avoid wasting time entering a store that no longer has units of the device. And for salespeople, there will no longer be any need to explain to dozens of customers per day that no, the Switch 2 is not currently available.

Is the Switch 2 out of stock?

The fact that Big N is taking the lead in this way may suggest that the manufacturer fears a shortage. In Japan, pre-order volumes have far exceeded expectations, and not everyone is expected to receive their Switch 2 on release day. In the United States, Donald Trump's tariffs have created a wave of uncertainty regarding access and pricing for the device. We can hope the situation will be better here, but there's no guarantee. We remember that the shortage of PS5 and Xbox Series X lasted for years.

These displays announcing a stock shortage will also have another use for Nintendo: to give free publicity to the Switch 2. They will indeed serve to remind consumers that the console is available, and that it is so in demand (implied, that it is therefore a good product) that they will have to wait a little while before being able to get their hands on it.

Nintendo did not send the console to testers, you can check out our hands-on with the Switch 2 to get a first look.
