The Pirates of the Caribbean saga has always been a benchmark in terms of choreography. The five films have consistently offered action sequences, each crazier than the last. Exciting fights, mind-blowing and ultra-creative choreography, for unforgettable moments of action. Here are our 8 favorite action sequences from the Pirates of the Caribbean license.
8) Barbossa, Elizabeth, and Will in Singapore - Pirates of the Caribbean 3
This is the opening sequence of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Barbossa made his grand return at the very end of the second installment, while Jack Sparrow was swallowed whole by the Kraken. Except that the English Empire is taking up more and more space on the seas, and the pirates are threatened. The latter want to convene the Pirate Council, but to do so, they have to go and find Jack Sparrow in Davy Jones's lair. Barbossa and Elizabeth therefore visit Sao Feng. Will is held prisoner there. After some exciting verbal jousting, Lord Beckett's troops land. Then begins a joyful, controlled mess, and a playful and exciting action sequence. The tone is set from the outset by Gore Verbinski.
7) The Kraken - Pirates of the Caribbean 2
This is clearly not the most impressive or longest sequence. But it is undoubtedly one with the most emotional powerhouses. A scene that takes place at the very end of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Elizabeth kisses Jack. A diversion to tie the pirate to the mast of the Black Pearl. The Kraken arrives, Jack manages to break free, and charges headlong into the creature's mouth, sword in hand. It's hard to get more epic!
6) Jack vs. Will - Pirates of the Caribbean 1
This is the first meeting between Jack and Will. The first confrontation between the two men. And the first choreography. A cult sequence in which Gore Verbinski lays all the foundations for his trilogy: ultra-creative fights, extremely fluid staging, impressive organic stunts, rhythm, humor, all wrapped up in an exciting, playful style. The entire essence of the Pirates of the Caribbean mythology is condensed in this scene.
5) Jack vs. Barbossa - Pirates of the Caribbean 1
We would have been remiss if we didn't mention the final confrontation between Jack Sparrow and Barbossa. A cult confrontation between the two men on Isla de la Muerta. An endless battle between two immortals, gripping theatrical tension, the iconization of two iconic characters from the franchise, and breathtaking special effects, even today, more than 20 years after the film's release.
4) Jack Sparrow's Escape - Pirates of the Caribbean 4
It's almost become a tradition. Every episode of Pirates of the Caribbean must begin with a spectacular sequence where stunts play a prominent role. This is the case with this brilliant scene from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in which Jack Sparrow escapes from an English royal palace. The famous pirate pulls off a string of incredible stunts, culminating in the use of a pastry as a comic relief. Brilliant!
3) The Guillotine - Pirates of the Caribbean 5
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is undoubtedly the weakest installment in the franchise. Nevertheless, Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg manage to pull off a cult sequence: the guillotine sequence. A scene that takes place at the beginning of the film. Jack Sparrow is about to be executed, his head stuck in a guillotine. But his allies come to his rescue. The famous pirate concludes his escape on the roof of a bank, pulled by speeding horse-drawn carriages. Pure genius.
2) Jack Sparrow vs Davy Jones - Pirates of the Caribbean 3
This is the final fight between these two cult figures of the license. An iconic confrontation, on the mast of the boats, on the hull, in the air, all in the middle of a storm in the middle of a whirlwind created by Calypso. Great art!
1) The wheel in Pirates of the Caribbean 2
Jack, Will, and James fighting to recover Davy Jones's chest. An anthology sequence. Gore Verbinski reaches the quintessence of the license in this long and exciting sequence in which three parties fight to recover Davy Jones's heart. We have rarely seen such a creative sequence in the entire history of the contemporary blockbuster. The pace is frenetic, the staging ideas border on genius, it's funny, and perfectly executed. We haven't seen anything better in the saga.
