Samsung could integrate Perplexity's AI assistant into its Galaxy S26, which would become the default solution instead of Google's Gemini tool.

Samsung threatens to play “I love you, I love you not” with Google on the Galaxy S26

Is Samsung ready to be unfaithful to Google? According to Bloomberg, the South Korean manufacturer is reportedly considering a deal with AI company Perplexity to use its AI technologies in future smartphones, starting with next year's Galaxy S26. Perplexity's AI assistant would become the default option, but Gemini/Google Assistant and Bixby could remain available for those who want to use them.

The Samsung Internet web browser could also offer Perplexity's search engine by default, while Bixby would benefit from access to some of its models. Perplexity has made a name for itself in the ultra-competitive AI market and is managing to grab market share from giants like Google and Microsoft. Establishing itself on the world's best-selling Android smartphones would certainly allow it to take a step forward.

Perplexity rather than Gemini for Samsung?

This isn't the first time Samsung has put such pressure on Google. Two years ago, Samsung threatened to replace Google with Bing as the default search engine on its devices, which ultimately didn't happen. Perhaps Samsung is trying to get a better deal from Google by opening the door to Perplexity.

For the South Korean manufacturer, this could also be a response to Google's desire to source its Tensor chips elsewhere. We know that the next Pixel SoCs are expected to abandon Samsung's architecture in favor of TSMC's. Google didn't hesitate to sideline Samsung when their partnership no longer suited it; its partner, but also competitor, may want to return the favor.

Perplexity's AI has already made its way onto Motorola's latest smartphones. But in this case, the user has the choice between four assistants: Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and the in-house solution Moto AI. Above all, Motorola is far from being as influential in the mobile industry as Samsung.
