A manufacturer has just unveiled a new feature for better managing multiple apps at once. This multitasking system changes everything on a folding smartphone. Samsung, despite being a pioneer in this format, still doesn't offer anything comparable.
For several years now, folding smartphones have gone beyond just a flexible screen. These are also tools designed for work, play, or multitasking. Samsung dominates this market with its Galaxy Z Fold range, but the Asian competition continues to innovate. And this time, it's vivo that has just surprised on the Weibo platform with a completely redesigned approach to multitasking on the big screen. The vivo X Fold 5, which will be launched on June 25 in China, introduces a new interface called Atomic Workbench. This system allows up to five apps to be displayed simultaneously, with one main app occupying the majority of the screen. The other four remain active in smaller areas at the top of the display. Each app remains active, even when it's in the background. The user can switch between them without closing or restarting anything. This is a more advanced approach than OnePlus' Open Canvas, which is limited to three apps.
vivo takes a step ahead of Samsung with a real innovation for multitasking
This multitasking solution aims to maximize available space while remaining fluid and readable. Its operation is reminiscent of iPadOS's Stage Manager, while remaining focused on individual apps. Samsung, for its part, has long offered a three-window display on its Z Folds, but without major changes. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 doesn't include any major new features in terms of multitasking. And barring any surprises, the upcoming Z Fold 7 shouldn't offer a solution as advanced as that of the vivo X Fold 5. By combining hardware power and a truly tailored interface, vivo shows that it's possible to take full advantage of a folding screen. The X Fold 5 also includes high-end features, such as announced compatibility with Apple Watches, IPX9 certification for water resistance, and a thinner design than its competitors. According to vivo, it will even be the lightest foldable phone in the world at the time of its launch. If Samsung wants to remain the leader in this segment, it will have to seriously rethink the use of multitasking in its next models.
