The Apple Vision Pro will soon have a competitor. Samsung should soon launch its mixed reality headset running Android XR.

Samsung's mixed reality headset could be released sooner than expected

At the end of 2024, Google announced Android XR, an operating system designed for mixed reality devices (combining both augmented reality and virtual reality). The company took the opportunity to announce that it was working on developing glasses based on this OS and that it was partnering with Samsung to design an XR connected headset.

This Samsung mixed reality headset was on display at MWC 2025 in Barcelona. We were able to get up close to it, but not try it out. So we thought it was a prototype and that we weren't likely to see a commercial product arrive on the market anytime soon. Against all odds, the device could finally be made available as early as this year.

According to information from the Korean media NewsPim, Samsung's mixed reality headset, codenamed Project Moohan, but which does not yet have a definitive commercial name, could be presented at a Galaxy Unpacked conference as early as September 29. It would then be sold from October 13, but in South Korea only. International availability will follow, but the source doesn't specify a date for it.

Samsung could even start teasing its product at the next Unpacked event. Scheduled for early July, the brand will announce its new foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7, as well as smartwatch and wireless earbud models. Perhaps we'll learn its real name, among other things.

Samsung reportedly targeted four key elements for the creation of this device: weight, battery life, content, and performance. For the latter, we already know that Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 Plus Gen 2 will be at the helm. For content, most Android smartphone and tablet apps will be compatible with the headset without any modifications from developers. Google and Samsung apps will be optimized for a more immersive experience. Regarding weight and battery life, we wonder if Samsung will be able to do better than Apple with its Vision Pro.
