Shadow AI: One in three employees uses AI without talking to management

Even though a recent study highlighted that only 32% of French SMEs had adopted artificial intelligence, far from companies in the United States which seem less resistant to AI, a very worrying phenomenon seems to be developing in these same organizations...

And if you have never heard of "Shadow AI", it is unfortunately not yet another revolutionary artificial intelligence tool, but a practice that may concern you without you even realizing it...

Shadow AI: what is it?

Although the concept is still new, and we sometimes talk about "shadow AI" in French as does IBM, the term Shadow AI should soon be completely familiar to you.

Concretely, Shadow AI consists of using artificial intelligence in your company without authorization from your superiors, and without technical supervision.

And while some professional requests to ChatGPT, Mistral, Google Gemini, or even Copilot may seem very harmless and without consequences, this practice is actually not without risks for companies...

37% of employees affected by Shadow AI

In a recent study published by Datacraft and Inria (French National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology) where 14 organizations agreed to participate, including Crédit Agricole, L’Oréal, Airbus, and Health Insurance, the researchers openly speak of "do-it-yourself practices" in companies.

The study "Artificial Intelligence at Work" also shows that one in twelve prompts contains confidential information, such as information about a company's customers or employees.

A practice that is attracting more and more employees

While recent studies have shown that French companies that use artificial intelligence are still far from being the majority, more and more company employees are using AI individually.

According to the study conducted by Yann Ferguson, a doctor of sociology at Inria, 65% of students would even be willing to favor a company that encourages the use of artificial intelligence. on a daily basis.

Faced with this phenomenon, many companies will have no choice but to adapt if they do not intend to see sensitive data compromised by their own employees...
