It's been over five years since Silksong, the sequel to the fantastic Hollow Knight, was announced by Team Cherry. Since then, the studio has continued to keep the suspense going in its own way, with a near-radio silence that's rather frustrating for fans. They're eagerly waiting for the studio to give them something concrete to sink their teeth into... and that might just be what's about to happen.
Indeed, Wario64, an observer with a particularly keen eye for detail, noticed that the game's SteamDB page (a third-party site that lists a lot of information about games on Valve's platform) had been updated for the first time in ages.
On the menu: an age limit for the trailer, a new logo, and achievements added in many languages. This last point is less anecdotal than one might think. Indeed, this is typically the kind of detail that studios don't bother to finalize until a game is more or less finished.
But more importantly, another internet user called HHrnz also noticed that new files have been integrated into the development version that will eventually be made available to players. The last time this happened was... in 2019, when this sequel was announced. Again, this is a particularly strong sign that the game is nearing the end of its development cycle.
Signs of an imminent release?
Should we expect a huge announcement in the very near future? Admittedly, none of these elements constitute definitive proof, so caution is advised.
But, on the other hand, these are undeniably the most evocative signals in a very long time. Moreover, the timing is anything but trivial. These changes come just before a busy period of events: the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, Summer Game Fest, State of Play… It’s therefore not absurd to think that Team Cherry could finally give us a proper announcement, or even release the game by surprise — a practice known as shadow drop.
So we’ll see you in a few days to find out if the community has, once again, gone wild — a common phenomenon due to the mystery surrounding the game’s development — or if these were indeed the warning signs everyone was waiting for.
