State of Play: The big recap of all the PS5 announcements with some really heavy stuff

Sony Interactive Entertainment got a head start on the Summer Game Fest 2025 ceremony with the announcement of a new State of Play, which took place this Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at 11:00 p.m. When this pre-recorded presentation was made official, PlayStation promised a show lasting around forty minutes, featuring games from studios around the world. These "must-have" titles will soon be available on PS5. Has the promise been kept? Were there any (big) surprises? Here's our big recap of all the PS5 announcements, including some really big ones.

Silent Hill f, Pragmata and Suda51 ignite the State of Play

State of Play: The big recap of all the PS5 announcements with some really heavy stuff

For this new State of Play on June 4, 2025, Sony Interactive Entertainment has chosen to begin its presentation with the new rhythm game from a well-known series by Tetsuya Mizuguchi (Rez, Tetris Effect): Lumines Arise. See you in fall 2025 to play it on PS5. After a very strange ad, we finally rediscovered Capcom's Pragmata. For this return, the Japanese manufacturer offered a gameplay trailer and a release window. If you're waiting for it, you'll have to be patient because it won't arrive until 2026, as confirmed during the State of Play.

Suda51 (No More Heroes, Killer 7) was invited to unveil his next action project, Romeo is a Dead Man. We find the Japanese creator's high-octane style with violence, blood, and crazy visuals. The State of Play then continued with some very gory gameplay for Silent Hill F. The title, which takes place for the first time outside the United States, in Japan in the 1960s, promises to be unsettling. And there's a big surprise: it will be available on September 25, 2025. Castlevania's spiritual successor, Bloodstained, will also be back with The Scarlet Engagement.

After a brief stint with Digimon, FF fans finally got a release date for Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. A remastered version that will feature both the old and new versions in terms of visuals and gameplay improvements. It's coming to PS5 and PS4 from September 30, 2025. Three independent games, namely Baby Steps, Cairn, and Hirogami, also revealed their release dates with trailers during the State of Play on June 4, 2024.

State of Play surprises with Nioh 3, James Bond...

State of Play: The big recap of all the PS5 announcements with some really heavy stuff

One of the big surprises was the reveal of Koei Tecmo's Nioh 3, which will be playable sooner than you think. A demo is coming today to PS5. Just when we thought the PSVR2 was dead and buried, PlayStation remembered its headset and revealed Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow. Thought you were done with Astro Bot? Get ready for new, more challenging levels and lots of bots starting this month. Giant Squid (Abzu, The Pathless) also appeared during the State of Play for Sword of the Sea, which will be available on August 19. If you like Journey, keep an eye out for it. And if you're a PS Plus subscriber, it will be free, as will FBC Firebreak, the Control spin-off.

Despite the IOI Showcase taking place this week, the Hitman studio brought the very first gameplay trailer to the State of Play for 007 First Light. The James Bond game that seems to include all the ingredients of the cult franchise with big action chunks. It's coming in 2026, but there will be more gameplay this summer. To follow the secret agent, it took some serious action, and Ghost of Yotei followed. Unfortunately, it was just for a very short clip that sets the stage for gameplay in July 2025.

The opposite happened for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, the new fighting game from Arc System Works (Dragon Ball FighterZ, Guilty Gear), which took up a lot of space at the presentation and should delight fighting and Marvel fans. Note that versus fighting fans can also grab a Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection compilation. Before its summer release, Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake also reappeared with numerous excerpts. Find all the announcements from the June 4, 2025 SOP below.
