“Streaming is dead”: Disney’s shocking statement doesn’t bode well for the platform’s series

Streaming giant Disney has made a very surprising statement to the director of the series Andor. It heralds a very dark future for the platform, which seems to no longer believe in it.

“Streaming is dead”: Disney’s shocking statement doesn’t bode well for the platform’s series

Watching a series has never been easier. Launch a streaming platform, find one that piques your curiosity, and let yourself be carried away. For us, the simple spectators, the experience ends there. But behind it all, there are film crews, actors and actresses... and money. Lots of money. As the years go by, Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+ invest more to offer us THE series that will boost audiences, and therefore revenues.

It's no coincidence that series that are highly appreciated by the public are suddenly canceled when they clearly haven't finished telling their story. It all comes down to profitability in the end. Every time they put money on the table, the aforementioned services are making a bet: that of a success that will bring in more than the sums spent. We still have to believe that it's possible. And at this level, Disney clearly has lost faith.

Disney+ series are compromised, the platform has a very pessimistic vision of the future

Talking about Andor during an interview with the media IndieWire, its director Tony Gilroy reveals a discussion he had with the streaming manager and it doesn't bode well. He explains that he had to negotiate with Disney to use terms deemed problematic in the United States. For example, “fascism.” The director must indeed think about “maximizing the audience and protecting the investment of a very courageous [company],” recalling that Disney invested $650 million in the two seasons of Andor. To justify its reluctance during the second season, the American giant bluntly stated that for it, “streaming is dead.” A hard-hitting statement whose repercussions could be major. Based on this premise, it’s only a matter of time before Disney starts mass-deleting series or, at the very least, significantly reducing their budgets. With the risk that the quality will suffer and that viewers will turn their backs on them, falsely giving Disney the impression that it was right. A fine example of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
