Superman will define the future of DC superheroes in cinemas. No less. More than a decade after the launch of the DCEU with Man of Steel, this new version hopes to prove that the stable's characters belong in theaters as much as at the highest levels of the global box office. James Gunn, who seems to believe in the adage "You can never be better served than by yourself," kicks off hostilities with his Superman played by David Corenswet. The new DC boss will return to the origins of the son of Krypton in a film that promises to be less dark than its predecessors, but just as edgy.
To ensure that viewers are there, the summer blockbuster is offering a final trailer. Unsurprisingly, it is the rivalries between Lex Luthor and Clark Kent that are highlighted. We see Nicholas Hoult's character do everything he can to bring the vigilante, who has been elevated to the rank of living god, down from his pedestal. He obviously wants to attack his family and loved ones. This is especially true for Lois Lane, who has publicly appeared alongside the superhero.
A slew of villains
We also see the legendary antagonist making his way to the Fortress of Solitude, attacking his rival's robotic companions. Moreover, it seems that Luthor is not the only threat looming over Metropolis and the world. We already know that Rick Flag Sr. will play a major role in this project, having been at the epicenter of the animated series Creature Commandos. Maxwell Lord, previously played by Pedro Pascal in Wonder Woman 1984, is also expected to be on the trip and put the superhero in serious trouble. There also remains the question of the immense creature present in the previous trailers, which returns here with the same sequence. On closer inspection, the colossus could ultimately be on the side of the victims.
A high-flying cast
The gallery of characters in this Superman is immense, much more than one would have thought. David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan will obviously be the headliners of the project, as will Nicholas Hoult. Nathan Fillion will play Green Lantern (Guy Gardner), while Isabela Merced and Edi Gathegi will lend their voices to Hawkgirl and Mister Terrific. Anthony Carrigan will play Metamorpho, and Maria Gabriela de Faria is credited as The Engineer. Frank Grillo is reunited with Rick Flag Sr., a few months after lending him his voice on Max. Also notable is the presence of Skyler Gisondo to play Jimmy Olsen. Judging by his images, he could be crucial to the story.
So, head to theaters July 9th to find out if Superman has the makings of a good superhero movie, if the film can compete with Marvel productions, and if the franchise is off to a good start. James Gunn, Peter Safran, and Warner Bros. have big ambitions for this reboot. They'll have to lay the foundations for a convincing franchise, without bordering on overcrowding with characters, issues, and references. We can already say that some sequences seem worth a look... Enough to encourage viewers to go to the cinema?
