Background video playback is one of YouTube Premium's most useful features, but it's possible to enjoy it without paying a subscription.
A YouTube Premium subscription allows you to get welcome benefits such as a 1080p image with a higher bitrate, the removal of ads, or the ability to listen music or video audio in the background. This last feature is very practical, as it allows you to continue playing audio when the smartphone screen is off, or when you are doing other things on your smartphone.
But it is not necessarily necessary to subscribe to YouTube Premium to enjoy playing videos in the background. On Android, many solutions exist to bypass this restriction put in place by Google. But on iPhone, where the ecosystem is more closed and monitored, the options are fewer.
Vivaldi imitates Brave and bypasses YouTube Premium
The Vivaldi browser now offers a way to listen to a video playing in the background. You'll have to go through the YouTube website rather than the app, but by logging into your account, you'll have access to most of the features, only the interface isn't the most convenient on mobile.
To enable this feature, download Vivaldi or the latest available update if the app is already installed on your device. Go to Settings, then you'll see the option Allow background media playback under the General category. And there you have it, you can start a video then open another app or lock your smartphone's screen, the audio will still be there. The iPhone's media controls are available in this scenario to control playback without having to re-enter Vivaldi.
This isn't the first browser to offer such a feature, as Brave has been capable of it for some time. The latter also has the advantage of blocking ads if you configure it correctly, another benefit included in YouTube Premium. But if you already use Vivaldi and prefer to avoid installing too many apps on your device, you know that your usual browser is now capable of this too.
