The Galaxy Z Fold 7 was supposed to mark a new milestone for folding smartphones. But a highly anticipated feature will once again be missing. Samsung has made a surprising choice that may disappoint more than one user.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 will skip this feature that we have been waiting for for years

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is shaping up to be Samsung's new high-end folding smartphone. As with every year, it should offer notable technical improvements in terms of screen, performance, and design. But when it comes to wireless charging, some users may be disappointed. As the industry moves toward more convenient and universal standards, this model will miss out on a much-anticipated new feature: native magnetic charging.

The Qi2 standard, which will be made official in 2023, improves wireless charging thanks to integrated magnets that allow for better alignment. It is directly inspired by the MagSafe system launched by Apple with the iPhone 12 in 2020. Contrary to what one might have expected from such a recent model, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will not support this feature natively. You will need to use a compatible magnetic case to benefit from automatic positioning with Qi2 chargers.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is content with the “Qi2 Ready” label without integrated magnets

A new Samsung model identified under the name SM-D637U has been Qi 2.1.0 certified by the Wireless Power Consortium. According to 9to5Google, this is indeed the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Like the Galaxy S25, it will only be “Qi2 Ready,” meaning it will not have the internal magnets provided by the Magnetic Power Profile. To obtain magnetic charging, you will therefore need to use a suitable case, sold separately. The manufacturer could offer an official one, but third-party brands should also market compatible accessories.

Another disappointment: the charging power remains stuck at 15W, as on previous models. In terms of performance, no progress is therefore expected. Samsung can still claim to be the first manufacturer to offer a folding smartphone that is partially compatible with Qi2. But in practice, its use will be limited. Magnetic charging is still rare on Android, even on high-end models like the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, the OnePlus 12, or Google's Pixel 9. We'll probably have to wait for the Qi 2.2 standard, which is currently in preparation, to hope for a real change.
