The Google app has a new “Images” tab, but what is it for?

The Google app is no longer limited to searching for text or links. A new section now lets you explore images based on your tastes. Fashion, decoration, travel... the "Images" tab displays a tailor-made visual feed, very reminiscent of how Pinterest works.

A personalized image feed integrated into the Google app

Google has begun rolling out a new section called "Images" in the beta version of its mobile app. The idea is to offer a feed of inspiring images, automatically generated from your preferences, which you can define from the first launch. Available categories include fashion, interior design, travel, and wellness.

In concrete terms, this feed is powered by images from Google search. By selecting at least three themes, the user obtains a wall of images to scroll through, similar to Pinterest's mood boards. A long press allows you to interact with each image: you can save it, share it, or even scan it with Google Lens. It is also possible to hide certain suggestions deemed irrelevant.

Google is still refining a few details

For now, only users registered in the application's beta program can access this new feature. Google is collecting their feedback to fix any bugs and adjust the interface before a wider rollout. The level of polish already observed suggests that this feature could soon arrive in the stable version of the application.

By venturing into the field of visual inspiration, Google seeks to enrich the mobile browsing experience while retaining its users. It remains to be seen whether this attempt will appeal beyond the testing phase and manage to compete, at least partially, with platforms like Pinterest.
