The iPhone of the future: Apple's two-step plan to revolutionize its smartphone design

Mark Gurman, a journalist at Bloomberg, continues to reveal Apple's plans. According to information he has gleaned, Apple is planning a "design overhaul" for the iPhone starting this year. This new aesthetic would notably be marked by the iPhone 17 Air, a smartphone that should focus on thinness, and the iPhone 17 Pro with a "redesigned back and camera." Mirroring Google's Pixels, Apple is reportedly opting for a massive camera block that spans the entire width of the iPhone. However, the front panel would not be much different from current models. It would therefore feature a screen with a Dynamic Island.

The road to a borderless iPhone

The informant mainly discusses the iPhone's evolution towards a 100% borderless design. According to Mark Gurman, the planned changes to the iPhone 17 lineup are just a "stepping stone to next year's upgrades." That's when Apple should really start rethinking its plans, ahead of the iPhone's 20th anniversary in 2027. Rumors indicate that Apple intends to shake up its smartphone lineup in a "monumental year."

First, the Cupertino giant is reportedly starting by reducing the size of the iPhone's Dynamic Island. According to him, the iPhone 18 Pro, expected in September 2026, will therefore have a more discreet dynamic notch. In fact, there would only be a small hole in the upper left corner of the screen for the front-facing camera sensor for selfies. According to The Information, Apple would hide the TrueDepth sensors for Face ID facial recognition under the touchscreen. This would already bring us closer to an iPhone entirely covered by a screen. At the same time, the company would also announce, and more importantly, its first iPhone with a folding screen. Rumors indicate that production of the device would begin in the coming months, which is in line with Apple's release schedule mentioned by other leaks.

Secondly, in 2027, Apple would launch the first iPhone with a front panel covered by a touchscreen. This time, the brand would slide both the sensors dedicated to Face ID and the front camera under the screen. There would no longer be a Dynamic Island or a notch. This mysterious iPhone, which would be none other than the iPhone 19 Pro, would look like a piece of glass. In several stages, the iPhone would complete the transition to a 100% borderless screen, begun in 2017 with the iPhone X and the disappearance of the Home button.
