The Lord of the Rings: 10 Facts You Didn't Know About Gil-galad

Gil-galad is one of the greatest elven kings in the Lord of the Rings universe. He is a hero who even faced Sauron himself. From his place in Tolkien's writings to his role in Peter Jackson's films and the Expanded Universe, here are eight facts you (maybe) don't know about Gil-galad.

#10 Gil-galad has a complicated family tree (canon and making of)

Gil-galad, High King of the Ñoldor in the Second Age, is a major figure in Tolkien's universe, but his family tree is particularly complex. Initially, he was briefly conceived as a descendant of Fëanor. In early versions of The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales, he is presented as the son of Fingon, son of Fingolfin. This version was adopted by Christopher Tolkien, the author's son, but he later considered it an editorial error. Tolkien also considered Gil-galad as the son of Finrod Felagund, Galadriel's brother, but abandoned this idea because Finrod never had children.

In his final notes, Tolkien made Gil-galad the son of Orodreth, Finrod's nephew and Angrod's son, drawing a more distant but coherent lineage. This genealogy, however, was never incorporated into the published stories. This vagueness illustrates the evolving nature of Tolkien's work, where even key characters have their origins altered. However, it is still important to clarify that this vagueness does not fundamentally affect the overall narrative of Middle-earth.

#9 Gil-galad was raised by the oldest Elf (canon)

Gil-galad, the last High King of the Ñoldor Elves of Lindon in Middle-earth, forged a deep bond with the elf Círdan, who, according to some, was the oldest living elf in Middle-earth (which we discussed in detail just here). Indeed, his father, worried about the many threats weighing on his kingdom, entrusted young Gil-galad to Círdan, the old Lord of the Grey Havens, to ensure his safety. Thus, Gil-galad grew up under the protection of this venerable elf, learning wisdom and resilience in the heart of a refuge in peril.

After the destruction of the Havens by Morgoth, Círdan and Gil-galad fled to the island called Balar, continuing their fight against the forces of evil. This bond of trust between them lasted throughout Gil-galad's life. As High King, Gil-galad gave Círdan a major role, entrusting him with the Ring of Fire, Narya, to continue the resistance against Sauron. During the War of the Last Alliance, Gil-galad fought bravely, but succumbed to wounds inflicted by Sauron. Without an heir, Círdan took up the torch and also became Lord of Lindon.

#8 Gil-galad is equipped with one of the most powerful Rings of Power (cannon)

Of the Three Rings forged by the elf Celebrimbor (discussed in detail here) for the Elves, Vilya is the most powerful. Vilya, whose name means "air" in some Elven languages, symbolizes balance and silent power. Known as the Sapphire Ring or the Ring of Air, it is adorned with a large blue sapphire set in gold. Although it remains influenced by the One Ring, Vilya escapes Sauron's corruption. Indeed, when Sauron unleashes war against the Elves, Celebrimbor entrusts Vilya to Gil-galad, High King of the Noldor Elves. He keeps it safe in Lindon, then passes it on to Elrond, who uses it discreetly at his home in Rivendell to, among other things, preserve himself, heal himself, and slow the effects of time on his body. At the end of the Third Age, after the fall of Sauron, the Ring loses its power and eventually leaves Middle-earth with Elrond, marking the end of an era.

#7 Gil-galad's weapon is feared by the orcs (canon and expanded universe)

Aeglos, the legendary spear of Gil-galad, the last High King of the Ñoldor, inspires terror in enemies, especially orcs. Its name in Sindarin means "snow spike" or "icicle," reflecting the deadly coldness of its blade. Forged with extreme precision, Aeglos is a long, thin weapon, designed to pierce and sow fear on the battlefield. Gil-galad wields it with formidable skill during the so-called War of the Last Alliance, confronting Sauron himself until his death on the slopes of Mount Doom. In Peter Jackson's film adaptation, Aeglos is a nine-foot spear, engraved with elven inscriptions evoking the fear it imposes on the orcs. This weapon symbolizes the power and honor of the elves in the face of darkness. (canon)

True to a certain European feudal imagery and culture, Tolkien makes his heroes' weapons into real characters in their own right. Almost all the heroes of the lore have a very specific weapon that seems to be part of their personality. When his characters have swords (or glaives depending on their size), these weapons have names, a history, and even powers. Bilbo and Frodo have Sting, Gandalf has Glamdring, Isildur and Aragorn have Narsil, and Gil-galad has the spear Aeglos. But if, after Isildur cuts off Sauron's fingers, we know the fate of his sword Narsil until Aragorn's hand, the spear Aeglos disappears. We do not know if Gil-galad was holding it when he died or if it remained stuck in Sauron. After the latter's defeat, she could have been picked up by Círdan, who watched over Gil-galad, or buried with him. Her fate after Gil-galad's fall remains a mystery, fueling legends and speculation.

#5 Is Gil-galad more powerful than Galadriel? (canon and fan theories)

The question of the power between Gil-galad and Galadriel divides Tolkien enthusiasts. Canonically, both are among the most powerful Elves in the history of Middle-earth, but their strength is expressed differently. For his part, Gil-galad, High King of the Noldor Elves during the Second Age, wages a long battle against Sauron, which he will continue until the Last Alliance. He wields Aeglos, an Elven spear whose sacred metal is feared by the servants of Darkness, and holds the ring of power Vilya, often considered the most powerful of the three Elven rings. Before dying in a battle with Sauron, he has time to inflict mortal wounds, even though the Dark Lord is equipped with his own ring of power.

Galadriel, for her part, excels in wisdom, magic, and foresight. Holder of Nenya, she protects Lothlórien against evil for centuries. In The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, she demonstrates a power capable of impressing any of her interlocutors, going so far as to destroy Dol Guldur, which was the lair of important Nazgûl. She also shows incredible resilience by refusing to take the Ring even though Frodo willingly offers it to her. In short, Gil-galad embodies warrior power, Galadriel, inner power. Who is the strongest? It all depends on how you define power.

#4 Gil-galad Has New Weapons (Expanded Universe)

In recent adaptations of Tolkien's universe, Gil-galad benefits from enhanced equipment. In Peter Jackson's films, his blue and gold armor, finely chiseled with elven motifs and Tengwar symbols, includes a breastplate engraved with ivy, a steel collar adorned with his twelve-star crest, and a deep blue cape. His golden crown, forged by Celebrimbor, replaces the traditional helmet. Finally, he inherits a long shield decorated with blue and gold enamel, which completes the ensemble. The Rings of Power series also reimagined his military equipment, restoring the helmet he wears in Tolkien's writings. Here, his armor is only gold, and he gains a new elven sword on his belt. Nothing is known about this weapon, except that it seems quite large. In Tolkien's texts, Sauron is not defeated with a single blow of the sword: he is first seriously wounded by Elendil and Gil-galad after a fierce battle. Both perish, but weaken the Dark Lord enough for Isildur to cut the Ring from him. Jackson preferred to simplify this sequence to focus attention on Isildur, Elrond, and especially on Narsil, the sword that directly links Aragorn to this heroic past. Its removal deprives Gil-galad of his great moment of bravery in the film; but showing the tragic end of Gil-galad, a character little known to the general public, would have complicated and clumsily lengthened the introduction. However, filming images and storyboards confirm that this scene, where Sauron burns Gil-galad with his bare hands, was indeed filmed. Moreover, with the exception of the series The Rings of Power, which takes place while Gil-galad is still alive, most of the adventures in the expanded universe take place after his death. In fact, Gil-galad is more often present through objects more or less directly linked to this legendary elven king. Thus, in The Lord of the Rings Online, Gil-galad is represented by a decorative statue available for purchase from Rombrennil, a renowned supplier located in Imlad Gelair, an elven sanctuary hidden in the heights of Rivendell. In the games Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, his weapon, the spear Aeglos, reappears, recovered by Talion and Celebrimbor from his tomb, and they use it as a weapon, especially when riding combat mounts like the Caragors (which we discussed in detail here).

#1 Gil-galad is back from the dead (expanded universe)

Although he died on Mount Doom, killed by Sauron during the Last Alliance, Gil-galad is a playable character in LEGO The Lord of the Rings: The Video Game. In this game, he can be found and purchased (and thus resurrected) in a cave in Mordor. Inspired by his film version, Gil-galad wears gold and blue armor, but… does not carry his legendary spear Aeglos, which remains mysteriously missing here since his confrontation with Sauron. Instead of his legendary weapon, Gil-galad wields a new elven sword and the shield that we described a little earlier.
