The Lord of the Rings, Titanic... 10 films that audiences don't watch to the end

The Lord of the Rings, Titanic... 10 films that audiences don't watch to the end

There are films that everyone talks about, that are unanimously acclaimed by critics and audiences, but that, deep down, no one ever sees in full. A survey on social networks has made it possible to determine which are these masterpieces of the Seventh Art that put viewers to sleep well before the end... Conducted by our colleagues at France Culture, this survey reveals that ten cult films that we all know are considered boring by thousands of Internet users, who even claim to have snored before the end. And we predict that you won't always agree with them!

The Lord of the Rings, Titanic... 10 films that audiences don't watch to the end

#10Apocalypse Now, Francis Ford Coppola

The Lord of the Rings, Titanic... 10 films that audiences don't watch to the end

Released in 1979, this two-hour-and-thirty-three-minute film about the Vietnam War failed to convince internet users, despite its cult status. Too violent, incomprehensible, "systematic drowsiness"... Viewers are not kind to Apocalypse Now, which finished tenth in this ranking.

#9 Death in Venice, Luchino Visconti

The Lord of the Rings, Titanic... 10 films that audiences don't watch to the end

Released in 1971, this Franco-Italian film is a great classic. It follows a failed and sickly composer in Venice, during the cholera epidemic, who falls under the spell of a young boy whom he secretly follows. "Beautiful and very boring", a real test against the eyes that close, poor dialogues... The reflections of the respondents on this work testify to a misunderstanding of this poetic but very slow universe!

#8 Gone with the Wind, Victor Flemming

The Lord of the Rings, Titanic... 10 films that audiences don't watch to the end

Scarlett O'Hara is not popular... Already the victim of a controversy in 2020 for depicting "racist prejudices", the film had been removed from the HBO Max catalog. Too bad for the streaming platform's subscribers, who could use it as a lullaby to fall asleep at night. Indeed, Internet users find the main plot insipid, the underlying racism unbearable and evoke the term "plague" to describe the heroine. Bad luck for this 1939 classic.

#7Citizen Kane, Orson Welles

The Lord of the Rings, Titanic... 10 films that audiences don't watch to the end

"Never managed to get into the film", incomprehensible script, lack of genius... While this 1941 film about a wealthy press magnate, played by the director himself, remained "the best film of all time" in the British Film Institute's ranking until 2012 (the year it was dethroned by Vertigo), internet users are giving it a miss.

#6A Clockwork Orange, Stanley Kubrick

The Lord of the Rings, Titanic... 10 films that audiences don't watch to the end

Stanley Kubrick, known for traumatizing his actors, appears twice in this ranking, and another of his works, Barry Lindon, just escapes the top 10. Deemed "unbearable" by viewers, who consider it too violent, and boring (one person even mentions snoring!): this is what awaits all those who dare to watch A Clockwork Orange.

#5The Tree of Life, Terrence Malick

The Lord of the Rings, Titanic... 10 films that audiences don't watch to the end

Starring Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain, this film received a Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, but it didn't help: the general public wasn't a fan. Once again, the story is incomprehensible and too long. Several people also claim to have left the cinema before the end of the film.

#4 Star Wars, George Lucas

The Lord of the Rings, Titanic... 10 films that audiences don't watch to the end

It's hard to find a more iconic film than George Lucas's Star Wars saga, but it's clear that many viewers are insensitive to the cosmic charm of the Sith and the Jedi. "Boring to death" dialogue, impossible to get into the story and soporific: it's hard to believe that these terms describe Star Wars!

#3 Titanic,James Cameron

The Lord of the Rings, Titanic... 10 films that audiences don't watch to the end

James Cameron's Titanic, released in 1997, was overtaken at the box office by Avengers: Endgame after having reigned supreme for more than two decades in the pantheon of the highest-grossing films in the history of the seventh art. Despite this cult status, the film is described as "tearful," very boring, and only interesting for the sex scene... (!)

#2 The Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson

The Lord of the Rings, Titanic... 10 films that audiences don't watch to the end

You, Hitek reader who arrived at this little 2 in the ranking, probably wouldn't agree with its presence on the list. And yet, Internet users explain that they fell asleep after ten minutes, were disgusted by blockbusters, and had no interest in the bestiary of fantasy. But what can you do, there's something for everyone.

#12001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick

The Lord of the Rings, Titanic... 10 films that audiences don't watch to the end

This 1968 work has been designated by hundreds of Internet users as the ultimate sleep aid. Viewers claim to have seen the film in fast motion, that it's "nice" but boring, and that the content is similar from start to finish.
