After the resounding success of the Batman Arkham games, the latest adaptations of the DC Comics universe have unfortunately failed to find their audience. Gotham Knights, for example, is a testament to this, as is Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which was a complete failure. Which makes the cancellation of the Batman Arkham Knight sequel, which was in development at WB Games Montreal ten years ago and which is now getting new images, all the more disappointing.
WB Games Montreal's canceled Batman game resurfaces
Indeed, for those who are still unaware, before working on Gotham Knights, the creators of Batman Arkham Origins had started working on "Project Sabbath," a title intended to continue the Arkhamverse universe. Canceled in 2015, however, the latter was never made official by the studio. This didn't stop some information from finding its way online, however, which led us to learn that we were to play as Damian Wayne, Bruce's son, as Gotham's new Dark Knight.
Since last year, several concept images have also been revealed, such as those shared by artist Daniel Simon on his ArtStation account. We saw Batman on his Batcycle, the concept of which likely led to the one we see in Gotham Knights. But things don't stop there, as it's now the turn of another artist who worked on "Project Sabbath", Rodrigue Pralier, to share a series of additional sketches on his ArtStation account.
The character designer at the time gives us a very nice glimpse of what could have been the game's cast. In addition to a close-up of Damian Wayne's character design, we can also see an older model of Bruce Wayne, who was clearly supposed to stay in the game, alongside several sketches dedicated to Killer Croc. Other characters, whose identities are not specified, are also present, knowing that one of them could possibly be an interpretation of Barton Mathis, alias Dollmaker in Batman.
The Arkhamverse on the way back?
This is likely to continue to twist the knife in the wound for many fans, many of whom regret the cancellation of this project in favor of Gotham Knights. The good news, however, is that the failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has reportedly prompted Rocksteady to return to Batman Arkham with a new game that will hopefully restore the studio's reputation. WB Games Montreal is also reportedly working on a new DC Comics single-player game, with no further details available yet.
