Mario Kart World has already broken a sales record by achieving a better start than The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild... on Japanese soil. According to Famitsu, the game sold 782,566 physical units compared to only 193,060 copies for BOTW. Obviously, MK World is a much more accessible title, and especially a much more mainstream one, but it shows the enthusiasm after Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which smashed everything with more than 68.20 million copies sold. But a big competitor is approaching with arguments that may appeal to some.
A blue hedgehog attacks Mario Kart World
If Mario Kart World breaks records, it will have to give up some ground to a competitor. SEGA's mascot, Sonic, is back, as you may know, this fall with the racing game Sonic Racing CrossWorlds. Even though the title won't feature Nintendo characters, it intends to compete with heavyweights from the Japanese publisher's stable. Of course, we'll find all the faces of the Sonic universe, as well as new drivers, who will be available via free updates. These include Joker from Persona 5, the famous singer Hatsune Miku, and Ichiban Kasuga from Like a Dragon.
But Sonic Racing CrossWorlds has other tricks up its sleeve to take on Mario Kart World. But this time, it will be through a season pass. Indeed, SEGA will replicate a formula already used by MK8 Deluxe to add new content. For DLC pack 1, the Minecraft universe will be in the spotlight, with Steve, Alex, and a Creeper as drivers. During the Kids' Choice Awards 2025, the Japanese publisher revealed the Sonic Racing CrossWorlds DLC pack 2, which will feature the cult SpongeBob SquarePants franchise.
Similar to Mario Kart, there will be a dedicated "Bikini Bottom" track, two drivers: SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Starfish, and the iconic Patty Wagon vehicle. But the nostalgia doesn't stop there, as SEGA has already revealed the identity of the DLC slot collaborations 3 and 4 - out of the six currently planned. And they are no strangers, given that these are crossovers with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from Ninja Turtles Teenage Years (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem) and Avatar Legends. This competitor to Mario Kart World is going all out and proves it with these new announcements.
