What will the future of the MCU hold? According to Kevin Feige, mainly mutants, but that's not all, since Marvel's mystical superheroes will also be in the spotlight. To unite the public around this new Saga, whose name is not yet known, a mutant could well succeed Wolverine... Her name? Magik, and we explain why she ticks the boxes for a leader in Phase 7 (and beyond).
Who is Magik?
Good question! This young woman, sister of Piotr Rasputin (Colossus), went from being a secondary character to a leading heroine earlier this year thanks to the release of her own comic book series. Illyana, aka Magik (or Magic in French), is able to teleport through space, time, and dimensions. A pretty cool power, which reminds us of Doctor Strange's. She is also the Supreme Sorceress of Limbo, a demonic dimension, a status that comes with various gifts—she masters black magic and necromancy.
Weapon-wise, she has mystical armor to protect herself and a spirit sword to harm other creatures. While these powers are pretty cool on paper, the way she obtained them isn't exactly cool. She was kidnapped as a child by the demon Belasco in Limbo, where she learned magic until she surpassed her master, dethroned him, and became ruler of this dimension. The result was the Darkchylde, the dark side of her soul that she struggles with daily.
A mutant and magician, Magik meets several criteria for the next MCU Saga
The one played by Anya Taylor-Joy in The New Mutants didn't get the space or attention she deserved in this failed adaptation of the Marvel comics. The next MCU Saga nevertheless has the opportunity to right this wrong, especially since Magik possesses two characteristics that are expected to be predominant in the future: mutation and magic. While the X-Men will be arriving en masse fromAvengers Doomsday, a new cast of superheroes will replace the former Fox actors starting in Phase 7. This will be an opportunity to introduce a new Illyana, whose magical dimension will also fill the void left by the departure of the Scarlet Witch. Indeed, the return of Wanda Maximoff seems increasingly compromised, her children expected to take her place in the rest of the MCU.
Magik shares traits with Elizabeth Olsen's superheroine, and not just a "fractured" soul. Both women are complex, dark, violent, but also resilient, brilliant, courageous, and loyal. Magik would make an excellent leader in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She also possesses some of the traits of Wolverine, a mutant whose popularity is no longer in doubt, but she is less "savage," and she has leadership qualities that he does not have. Unlike the vast majority of her fellow mutants, Magik is connected to the supernatural, and Limbo even opens the door to a "cosmic" dimension for her. This is another major advantage for the mutant, given that the future of the MCU could feature several stellar superheroes, including the 4F and the Guardians of the Galaxy.
