Microsoft has just urgently released a new Windows 11 patch update. This fixes an “ACPI.sys” error that appeared during the previous update and prevented its installation. The patch should reinstall the missing update(s) after its installation.

This urgent Windows 11 update finally fixes the “ACPI.sys” error that appears on many PCs

You may have had the unpleasant surprise of encountering an error code during the last May update (KB5058405). During the installation, a blue screen appears on many machines. This mentions a problem with the ACPI.sys file, and the error code 0xc0000098, which doesn't reveal much more about its causes.

Following this message, the PC enters recovery mode and restores the previous backup point. As a result, it becomes impossible to apply any subsequent update requiring the installation of update KB5058405. After several weeks, however, Microsoft acknowledged the problem and urgently pushed a corrective patch that should put an end to this blockage.

This update fixes an annoying issue that has been preventing the installation of Windows 11 updates for weeks

The update in question is optional, and only required on PCs that experienced the error message. It must therefore be downloaded and installed manually, making sure to select the KB5062170 package (builds 22621.541 and 22631.541) via this link. This procedure, which bypasses Windows Update, is mandatory for affected machines, since the installation package will not appear in this system component.

In detail, the error message appears towards the end of the installation of the KB5058405 package or the May 2025 security update on systems running Windows 11 versions 23H2 and 22H2. The full message displayed when the error occurs is the same one we quoted on the front page of this article: “Your PC/Device needs to be repaired. The operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors. File:ACPI.sys. Error code: 0xc0000098″.

Microsoft doesn't clearly explain what triggers the error on some machines. It can only be noted that ACPI.sys interfaces the operating system with hardware resources related to power, restart, and sleep. There's no need to retry installing KB5058405 once the patch is installed. Microsoft has designed it as a cumulative update that automatically installs all outstanding updates on your system.
