He's the star of the Mission Impossible franchise, and he's starred in such classics as Top Gun, Eyes Wide Shut, and Minority Report. At over 60, Tom Cruise is still an international star and still wields immense influence in the Hollywood system. Yet, Tom Cruise is also a Scientologist. A religion for some, a sect for others. In any case, Scientology has led Tom Cruise down a slippery slope. The proof is in these 6 totally crazy events, these 6 terrible things that Tom Cruise did in the name of Scientology...
What is Scientology?
Scientology is a religious movement founded in the 1950s by the American writer L. Ron Hubbard. For Scientology, each human being is first a "thetan," an immortal spiritual entity, distinct from the physical body and the spirit. According to Hubbard, man is essentially good and capable of rediscovering, thanks to Scientology, his unlimited potential. The goal is to get rid of one's "engrams," negative energies that stem from trauma. The Church claims to offer a psycho-spiritual model that is supposed to improve mental health, social relationships, and even professional capacity. Basically, Scientology's main idea is that Man is a spiritual and immortal being. The goal of Scientology is therefore to reach the best version of oneself: the thetan.
In the United States, Scientology is considered a religion and has its own Church located in Los Angeles. In many countries, there are Scientology centers where one can take introductory courses. In 1993, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) granted the Church of Scientology the status of a tax-exempt religious organization, after years of litigation. In France, Scientology does not have the status of a Church and is considered a sect.
Tom Cruise is one of the prominent representatives of Scientology, which he publicly defends. He has never hidden and has often drawn his close friends into this sect, which is much more dangerous than it appears. The proof is in these 6 facts you may not have known about Tom Cruise and Scientology.
Tom Cruise and Scientology
It was in 1986 that Tom Cruise joined the Scientologists. It was his wife at the time, Mimi Rogers, who introduced the actor to Scientology. Scientologists have a recurring modus operandi. The goal of Scientologists is to penetrate all facets of society and influential environments. To reach Hollywood, the Church of Scientology sets its sights on Tom Cruise. Mimi Rogers is then sent by Scientology to convert Tom Cruise and make him a sort of international representative.
Today, Tom Cruise is heavily involved in Scientology and its international influence. He is so close to the current leader, David Miscavige that some speak of a true close friendship. He has been used as the public face of Scientology to recruit and promote its values. Internal documents and testimonies, including from defectors, claim that the Church has mobilized significant resources to surround him, secure his relationships, and even organize his personal life.
6) His marriage to Nicole Kidman
In 1990, Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers separated. Soon after, Tom Cruise met Nicole Kidman, who became his new wife. However, this marriage was allegedly arranged by Scientology organizers, known as matchmakers. In fact, Scientology organizes arranged marriages to extend its influence over certain circles, including the Hollywood industry. Thus, this marriage to Nicole Kidman was apparently a strategy of the Church of Scientology to further establish its influence over the Hollywood world.
5) His divorce from Nicole Kidman
10 years later, after adopting two children, the couple separated. Nicole Kidman decided to distance herself from Tom Cruise, in particular because of Scientology. Cruise never managed to win Kidman over to his beliefs, and over time, Nicole Kidman realized the danger Scientology posed. A Catholic by faith, Nicole Kidman always categorically refused to join Scientology. She even tried to get Tom Cruise out of the sect, which didn't please David Miscavige. Nicole Kidman then began to face pressure from Scientology. Her phone was wiretapped, and private detectives were hired by David Miscavige to spy on her. Tom Cruise himself reportedly gave his consent to these dubious activities.
At the time of the divorce, Tom Cruise obtained custody of their two children, who were also followers of Scientology. Tom Cruise had indeed managed to recruit young Isabelle and Connor into all this religious madness... Tom Cruise and Scientology had indeed manipulated the two children. They had made Nicole Kidman the person to avoid. In front of the children, Tom Cruise and the Scientologists did not hesitate to demonize the poor woman, going so far as to say that they had to "get rid of her." Since their divorce, Nicole Kidman has not seen her children again...
4) A casting of women
According to several sources, including ex-members and the documentary Going Clear, Scientology organized a casting of women to become Tom's partner Cruise, after his divorce from Nicole Kidman. Nazanin Boniadi, an Iranian actress, recounted being chosen by the Church, given a makeover, reeducated, and pushed to go out with Cruise, before being cast aside when the relationship failed.
3) His relationship with Katie Holmes
While Tom Cruise failed to convert Nicole Kidman, he tried again with his other partners, notably the actress Katie Holmes. Once again, their marriage was arranged by Scientology. This time, Katie Holmes fell into the trap and joined Scientology. In 2006, the couple welcomed their first child: Suri Cruise. Except that Scientology has specific requirements, particularly regarding the delivery of an infant. Katie Holmes is forced to give birth according to the precepts of Scientology. One of these is the absolute prohibition of screaming during labor. No sound must come out of her mouth to avoid giving the baby a negative experience and giving it its first engram. Katie Holmes quickly realizes the danger of Scientology. She realizes that this so-called religion relies heavily on donations and on questionable financial transactions. She also realizes that Scientology primarily targets emotionally fragile people so it can better manipulate them.
Katie Holmes, in the midst of existential doubt, gradually distances herself from Scientology. But while it's easy to get into this sect, it's much harder to get out. She feels watched, and discovers that Tom Cruise is planning to send their child, Suri, to the Sea Organization, a terrifying organization where the precepts of Scientology are taught in an almost tyrannical manner.
Faced with this drastic stance from her husband, Katie Holmes has only one mission: to protect her child. In 2012, she then prepares her divorce from Tom Cruise in total secrecy to avoid arousing suspicion. Her father, a divorce lawyer, helps her plan her escape. In public, she acts as if nothing is wrong, but in private, she gathers all the paperwork to leave this hell. She even rents an apartment in the greatest secrecy to move in with her daughter. Following this experience, Tom Cruise cuts all ties with Suri, even going so far as to disown her. The young woman changes her name, taking her mother's surname and becoming Suri Holmes. It's been 10 years since they last saw each other.
2) The Sea Organization
As mentioned earlier, the Sea Organization is the bastion of Scientology. According to some testimonies and reports, children and adults are forced to work in extreme conditions. A form of passive and spiritual slavery that serves Tom Cruise well, since these victims were allegedly forced to renovate or maintain the actor's properties. Marc Headley, a former member of the Sea Org, claims that Scientologists worked for free for Tom Cruise, under direct orders from David Miscavige. Several witnesses state that Sea Org members were assigned to his personal service to build luxury amenities. These members often live in very precarious conditions, are paid barely a few dollars a week, and have no personal freedom.
1) Tom Cruise: Anti-Psychiatry Ambassador
Scientology rejects all forms of psychiatry and psychology and Tom Cruise has been an active ambassador for the anti-psychiatry crusade led by Scientology. In 2005, in a famous interview on NBC, he attacked journalist Matt Lauer and severely denigrated antidepressants and psychiatry. He says that "psychiatry is a pseudoscience," that drugs like Prozac are useless, and claims that he "knows more than psychiatrists." He publicly criticizes actress Brooke Shields for taking antidepressants after postpartum depression, accusing her of "compromising her mental health."
Tom Cruise has never publicly denounced the multiple accusations against Scientology, despite damning testimony. Tom Cruise is at the heart of the Scientology system, and although there is no evidence that he personally ordered these abuses, he benefits directly from the human and material resources of the Church and legitimizes an organization accused of serious abuses.
