We're still waiting to learn the identity of the next James Bond. While we wait to find the lucky one, Amazon MGM Studios is also looking for the person to direct the new adventures of the British secret agent. A list of candidates is circulating, and it goes without saying that there are some surprising names!
As you probably know, Daniel Craig has definitely abandoned the James Bond costume in No Time To Die in 2021. Since then, we've been waiting to find out the identity of the person who will take over the role of the most famous British secret agent in the world.
There is indeed There have been a few rumors in recent years, such as Idriss Elba or Aaron Taylor-Johnson, but nothing concrete yet. Meanwhile, control of the James Bond license has also ended up in the hands of an American web giant, namely Amazon. Indeed, the Seattle-based firm officially acquired the legendary MGM studio in March 2022 for $8.5 billion.
But nearly three years later, it's not just death that's been delayed. Still no name to play James Bond, but also no director to give birth to the future adventures of the character created by Ian Fleming. Despite everything, and if we are to believe recent statements from the very well-informed Jeff Sneider, a list of potential candidates is currently circulating in Hollywood.
Who will direct the next James Bond? The first names are circulating
According to him, these filmmakers have already approached Amazon and MGM to take over and present their respective visions. And it's safe to say that there are some great names in the mix:
- Edward Berger
- Denis Villeneuve
- Edgar Wright
- Jonathan Nolan
- Paul King
Also according to his information, Alfonso CuarĂ³n (Children of Men, Gravity) was also considered, but he ultimately withdrew from the project. Still, the candidates still in the running are undeniably promising. Each in their own way, they could breathe new life into this saga.
All styles for the rebirth of 007
Edward Berger, director of the excellent All Quiet on the Western Front (Netflix) and screenwriter of the Oscar-winning film Conclave, could well sign a dark and raw James Bond. For his part, Denis Villeneuve has proven his mastery in producing bitter thrillers (Sicario, Prisoners, Incendie) and universes marked by high-flying artistic direction (Blade Runner 2049, Dune Part 1 & 2).
With Edgard Wright, the father of the Cornetto saga (Shawn of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World's End) and Baby Driver, we could well see the return of a James Bond who is more uninhibited, more offbeat and edgy. Quite the opposite of Jonathan Nolan, creator of the Westworld and Fallout series, who has accustomed us to highly intellectual stories, complex narration and characters with ambiguous morality.
Finally, Paul King, the name that stands out the most in our eyes. For good reason, the British director is very far from the world of espionage, having made his name with the superb Paddington 1 and 2 and the marvelous Wonka. But in his films, he has demonstrated his mastery of choreographing action scenes, writing deep characters, and bringing wonderful worlds to life. All qualities he could bring to James Bond.
