In addition to a ROG Ally in the brand's colors coming later this year, and like Sony with the PS6, Xbox is actively working on the next-gen console that will succeed the Series X|S. For its design, Microsoft announced a multi-year partnership with the manufacturer AMD. This future machine will leverage the power of AI, while maintaining backward compatibility with previous generations of consoles. Another notable element of this future system: a feature that brings it much closer to a PC.
A next Xbox that will compete more with the PC than the PS6?
For several generations, Microsoft's gaming branch has struggled to compete with Sony in the home console market. So much so that, for some time now, it has been playing more the role of publisher than manufacturer, bringing Xbox exclusives to the PS5, and probably eventually the Nintendo Switch 2. Thus, the next console from the X brand could try to tackle a market other than that of the PS6: the PC.
In the video announcing its partnership with AMD below, Sarah Bond, president of Microsoft's gaming branch, made a particularly telling statement in this regard. " All of this is about building a gaming platform that goes everywhere with you, so you can play your games wherever you are. We want to deliver an Xbox experience that isn't confined to a single store or a single device." Thus, like the Xbox ROG Ally, the group's next-gen console should integrate numerous stores such as Steam, the Epic Games Store, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, and many others. This also resonates with Microsoft's marketing campaign that "This is an Xbox," referring to a console, but also a TV or tablet.
On paper, Microsoft's next-gen console could therefore offer as much freedom as a PC, in order to harmonize its entire ecosystem, and potentially allow access to PlayStation games via their Steam ports. Note, however, that Sony would have the ability to block the appearance of these games on other platforms. Either way, the next Xbox should mark a turning point for the hardware side of Microsoft's gaming branch.
