X-Men reboot: 3 MCU villains to give mutants a hard time

While a reboot of the X-Men within the MCU is no longer in doubt, a new rumor suggests that three big villains will soon oppose Charles Xavier, Cyclops, and Jean Grey.

The X-Men in the MCU after Secret Wars?

There is no longer any doubt that the X-Men will join the MCU in the near future. The mutant gang has been teased several times in recent years: Beast in the post-credits scene of The Marvel Cinematic Universe, the release of the animated series X-Men 97, the return of Wolverine and his cult actor Hugh Jackman in the third installment of Deadpool last year, and the confirmation of a large part of the Fox cast in Avengers: Doomsday, including Patrick Stewart (Professor Xavier) and his enemy Ian McKellen (Magneto). So when will the mutants return to the big screen after the monumental failure of X-Men: Dark Phoenix in 2019? Looking at the Marvel calendar, nothing is planned after Secret Wars in 2027. An ideal date to integrate new characters, especially since the sequel to Doomsday risks marking a turning point within the MCU.

Poll: Are you looking forward to the X-Men reboot?

This X-Men reboot has even found its director, in the person of Jake Schreier. A rather bankable name since he just directed Thunderbolts*, the film well on its way to being another box-office flop. The second this year after Captain America: Brave New World. But unlike the defender of the United States, the team led by Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) is more appealing to the press and the public.

Three villains to put a spanner in the works of the X-Men

A sign that the film is progressing well, and should soon become more specific. While waiting for official information, rumors are giving Marvel fans something to chew on. Recently, MCU analyst Alex Perez, also a contributor to The Cosmic Circus, claims that the X-Men reboot will include three new villains never before seen in a Marvel film, but affiliated with the X-Men universe: Bolivar Trask, Senator Robert Kelly, and Mister Sinister. For those who remember, he appeared in the first X-Men trilogy in 2000, portraying actor Bruce Davison. He was transformed into a mutant by Magneto, but died when his body rejected the mutation. Later, in X-Men 2, Mystique took on his appearance to infiltrate the government.

Bolivar Trask is the creator of the Sentinels. X-Men fans know him as Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones)) in Days of Future Past. This scientist, who believes that mutants represent an existential threat to humanity, designs intelligent robots capable of hunting them down.

Finally, Mister Sinister, a character that comic book fans are no doubt familiar with, as he is one of the X-Men's main antagonists. A geneticist obsessed with evolution and the creation of a perfect mutant race, he has yet to appear in Fox's live-action films, but is mentioned in X-Men: Apocalypse via a post-credits scene. His big Marvel debut would bring the mutant legacy full circle. A fine lineup of antagonists then. While Marvel Studios hasn't commented on this rumor, here are three potential protagonists who would seriously challenge the team led by Professor Charles Xavier.
