It's not just WhatsApp that's cutting ties with older smartphones. The YouTube app has also updated the iOS version required to run. A number of iPhones are now incompatible with Google's app.
Web version still accessible
Version 20.22.1 of the YouTube app now requires iOS 16. This excludes the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, and the first-generation iPhone SE. These smartphones, released between 2015 and 2016, do not go beyond iOS 15.8.4. The iPod touch 7 is also excluded from the party, as are the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4 (you now need iPadOS 16 to use the app).
However, it's likely that this decision will ultimately affect relatively few users, as these are very old devices, most of which have likely been replaced in the last few years. However, given the number of YouTube viewers—more than 2.5 billion active each month!—it's possible that some will still have these models.
These users will, however, be able to access the platform directly from a web browser. But of course, the experience isn't the same either.
