Google is strengthening its notification management with Android 16 by introducing “live updates.” This type of notification, already present on iOS, could make it easier to track trips, deliveries, or other events that require continuous updates.
New notifications for Android 16
With Android 16, Google is introducing live updates, a new category of notifications designed to display information in real time. Inspired by iOS’ “live activities,” this feature aims to simplify the tracking of trips, deliveries, and other events that require frequent updates. Unlike traditional notifications that pile up with every change, live updates are updated directly without taking over the screen.
This type of notification will appear more prominently on the lock screen, as on the “Now Bar” of One UI 7, as well as in the status bar. Enabling users to access essential information without having to open an application or pull down the notification panel. Google has not yet detailed all the aspects of this new feature, but the first beta of Android 16 reveals its broad outlines.
Live updates
This new display is designed for applications requiring frequent updates, such as ride-hailing, delivery or navigation services. Currently, applications such as Uber or Deliveroo already display tracking notifications, but they must manage them individually by refreshing each time there is a change. Google is now offering a standardized system allowing all applications to use this type of dynamic display.
In Android 16 Beta 1, live updates currently take the form of progressive notifications, which indicate key steps, such as the imminent arrival of a driver or the distance before a next turn in navigation. Eventually, these notifications could also appear as bullet points in the status bar and on always-on displays.
While the feature is currently being tested, Google has yet to make all the details official. Some bits of Android 16 code suggest that these notifications will always be visible on the lock screen and status bar. With Android 16’s notification interface being overhauled with a compact mode, live updates should continue to be prioritized to avoid getting drowned out by a stream of less important alerts.
