Apple: iCloud passwords arrive "officially" on Firefox, but not for everyone

After launching a Chrome extension for its iCloud passwords nearly three years ago, Apple has finally considered doing the same thing for Firefox users. iCloud Passwords, that's the name of the extension, however, includes a limitation that should slow down its use. The extension is currently only usable by users under macOS.

iCloud Passwords, an extension developed by a Frenchman

To offer Firefox users an extension for their iCloud passwords, Apple didn't need to do much. And for good reason, the Cupertino firm simply set its sights on an already existing extension developed by a Frenchman, Aurélien Garnier. The extension, released just a year ago and whose source code is available on Github, has apparently been bought by Apple. At least, that's what the developer's message published yesterday on Github suggests.

Now that it's in Apple's hands, the few limitations that remained in the extension should soon be lifted. Because for now, the iCloud Passwords extension for Firefox only works for users with a Mac running at least macOS Sonoma. A limitation due to the fact that the module required for the extension to access the iCloud Keychain is only available from macOS Sonoma and later versions.

As for Windows, the extension is not yet functional. First, Apple will need to update its iCloud app for Windows to include support for the Firefox extension, as it did for the Chrome and Edge extensions.
