Since its announcement over two years ago, MindsEye has had difficulty convincing us completely. The title seems promising in some respects, but extremely worrying in many others. The communication surrounding the title is very strange, and the Build A Rocket Boy studio, founded by Leslie Benzies, the former president of Rockstar North (and producer of all GTA between 2001 and 2014) does not really reassure us.
First announced as a title that would only be accessible in Everywhere (a sort of social platform currently being developed by Build A Rocket Boy), MindsEye was finally presented as a separate game, published by IO Interactive.
Expected for this summer, then brought forward to June 10, the game had still not officially shown itself with very few images, rare promotional videos and no gameplay. A few hours ago, Build A Rocket Boy shared gameplay clips, only on their Discord, preferring not to publish the video on social networks. Given the quality sequences, there is reason to be worried.
MindsEye: the game not really ready?
In this video shared on the official Discord of MindsEye, then published on YouTube by fan channels, we can see gameplay sequences with driving and gunfights. If graphically, the game seems rather pretty and convincing, on the gameplay side, it's something else.
The gunfights seem very generic, soft, without real dynamism. The character physics aren't really up to scratch, with enemies that are on the verge of flying away when they take a shotgun blast. The appearance of explosions also seems very strange. Regarding driving, the camera seems out of step with the car's behavior. The whole thing gives us a rendering that doesn't look very fluid and pleasant.
Overall, the gameplay of MindsEye really gives us the impression of being a decade behind, being quite similar to games like Mafia II or even The Godfather II, on the PS3 and Xbox 360 generations. Obviously, with only a month to go before its release, there is reason to be very worried.
The studio should share more images and sequences soon, hoping that these will be more convincing than this first glimpse.
